Good games and Wii now there's a contradiction
But good RPGs are hard to find these days (on any system)... The genre isn't really evolving much these days and the best ones are still the PS1/2 ones afaik... I think there are some tales of... games on wii tho, might wanna check those out (or at least some reviews)... not sure what else there is... |
I think you mean SNES.
|
indeed i do, but doubt many ppl would be interested in those gfx... |
When it comes to RPGs, it's all about gameplay, story, battle system, and immersion; FF cut-scenes be damned. |

@Shangstar
There's a small DVD store on Xinle lu (east of Xiangyang lu) which has a pretty good selection of games as well as other software. |

hey everyone
i have a question about this store and games buying in general in shanghai
well ive been in shanghai since 2005 and think i bought my first xbox 360 in 2006. seems to me that a lot of the games stores are going down hill. i had a couple of stores where i used to buy my 6 rmb games (changle lu and fumin lu stores). the changle lu store used to be great...fumin lu not so good. changle lu store always had great selection and most importantly they actually worked maybe 80-85% of the time. well, now that store has gone seriously down hill...went there for first time in 6 months last week...bought 6 or 7 games...only 1 worked. the others just did nothing..hung on screen (white background with xbox logo - seems like there is actually nothing at all on the disc)
this has been my experience with a number of stores for last 6 months or so....and where lots of the stores used to have an xbox hooked up so that you could check the game in the shop, now many dont.
was just wondering if anyone else had noticed this? what is situation with the beijing lu stores games? how often do you get dud? and can you check the disc in the shop?
i know i know...shouldnt complain too much as they are dirt cheap. but its quite frustrating when you cross shanghai to buy only to get home and the disc has nothing on it. might only be 6 rmb but hey, still feel cheated. i'm sure they cant check every disc before they sell it...but its got to the point where i dont think it is simply bad luck that i am getting a dodgy disc. i now have 3 non working copies of ghostbusters and 2 non working fifa 10...all bought form different shops in past couple of weeks.
so if i make the trek to beijing lu what are the chances i will get working copies of these games?
cheers guys and gals |
Bring your xbox into your favourite game store and get them to update your iXtreme to the current version (1.6 I beleive). All of those "duds" you have bought are working games, your mod in the xBox is just out of date and doesn't recognize them.
Thanks! Though that is far from an exhaustive list, the big names should appear there. |

I've bought at least 45 games from there and usually have an 85% success rate but I bought 8 games there 2 weeks ago and not 1 game actually worked!!!
For 6RMB, obviously it's not about the money -just disappointing... |

thanks for the reply.
just a quick question...what is the process for updating this? i seem to recall a few years ago when i bought the game crackdown, that it prompted me to update something..but that was on the disc that i had bought for 6 rmb.
is this a similar process? but now they dont put it on the dvd?
also how much does it cost? and can anyone recommend a good place to get the ixtreme updated? (ie, a place they have had it done without problems)
cant wait to get it sorted...tekkan6, fifa 10, pro evo, forza 3 - just in time for winter keeping warm in apartment! |

PS3 games can be found in that store on bei jing lu, there's also a small shopping mall in nan jing xi lu, corner of wulumuqi lu, a few stores have games there too.
There are shops all over the place, if you have chinese friend they can check on tao bao, many sell through tao bao and also have shops, I've been to a few and most are reliable. |

I just left my xbox at 1601 after showing them I wanted to play CoD:MW2 (I'm not actually going to play until well after the release, but it was the only wave 4 game I knew of to show them). They said to come pick it up in three hours and it would cost 50 kuai. I'm sure for the amount of work they are doing its a little expensive and takes too long, but I'm not about to do it myself and I trust them.
I'll tell you if it worked when I go back and pick it up. |

They tried to tell me that my Samsung drive needed to be switched in order for it to work and wanted 200 RMB. I called BS and came home to do some extra research now that I knew what my drive was.
1.61 is out and working for Samsung, BenQ and Lite-on drives, I'm sure the shop will figure this out soon enough (or if anyone who can speak Chinese wants to help I can give you information to tell them to speed them on their way).
I tried to ask for the activation.iso disc so I can load wave 4 games using 1.6 and they told me they had the disc, but it won't work. I told them to just give it to me anyway, I will pay and they said "No." Sometimes it is incredibly frustrating working with Chinese shops (pouring rain outside and the lawsons lady won't sell me a poncho for my bike because its a size too small for me, etc).
I was hoping Dragon Age: Origins was wave 3 though, no luck |

hey esspea
so you took your xbox in and then when you went to pick it up they tried to get another 150 rmb from you? did they actually do anything to your box? or just say they hadnt done anything cause they needed to switch the samsung drive?
i took mine in today. gotta pick it up in a few hours. just told them i couldnt play new games and wanted to update to 1.61
worried now..
so from what i understand...this update should allow me to play some new games (as long as they are wav3) fifa10, pro evo etc...but not the newer wav4 games such as call of duty modern warfare and dragon age and gta liberty city stories
this strikes me as quite annoying....maybe in this case we need to post here what is a wav 3 and what is a wav 4 game (at least until another ixtreme update come out)
well i will be trying my returned xbox tonight..will try to post tomorrow about how it went |

Why not just download the disk yourself, and burn, its not like its a huge file...
http://www.abgx360.net/download.html
@Esspea
I think 50rmb is quite reasonable considering the work goes into it.
They need to take the machine apart, connect the dvd drive to a computer using a special cable.
Save the current drive ID
Refirmware the drive
Disconnect, and put the 360 back together.
Takes a good half an hour, for 50rmb thats a steal.
You can do it yourself, but you need to get or make the cable (easy to buy on taobao), plus the funky screwdriver set to unscrew the xbox 360, plus keep up to date on the latest hacks etc. If your time is valued at nothing, then its expensive, otherwise... |

ok. just been to pick up the xbox hoping for a firmware update. (trek across town was not so bad this time of night...30 mins there 30 back)
so, i arrive...there are about 6 or 7 xbox 360''s sat around...we check which is mine...he asks "which games didnt work" ? i said (like earlier today when i took it in) "ALL the new games".
so he plugs mine in,,,and gets out fifa 10 (which i had bought 3 times with none working before i realised i must have a problem with my box) puts it in the drive...nothing. same as before. goes to white background with xbox 360 logo. he tries it again . still nothing. so now i'm thinking maybe they hadnt got round to doing it...and i would have to wait while they did it or come back tomorrow.
he stars to talk to the woman (owner) behind the counter, then out comes the new dvd drive that esspea talked of. 200 rmb. it needs to be replaced.
so, have they looked at my box at all? am i gonna have to pay them 50 then a further 200 for new drive? all seemed a bit confusing, so decided that a would make a retreat and wait for things to become more clear in next few weeks.
so i decline, trying to explain in my bad chinese that i looked on net, and drive shouldnt need to be replaced. so next they make a call....to the engineer who does harder jobs? anyway he speaks english and explains that yes the drive needs replacing at cost of 200. however when i ask him what drive is in my xbox, or if the people in the shop know what my drive is (because ixtreme 1.61 is working with samsung benq drives) he quickly changes the subject and then says that i DONT actually need to replace the whole drive, its just that the PC in the shop cannot read from my xbox or indeed write to it. and that i could leave it overnight and they would use the pc at the womans house to do the update.
this seems a little suspicious to me ...changing tack from saying i needed to replace the drive to then saying i didnt when i said i had done some research on it. (the research purely being esspeas previous post!)
i dont want to besmirch the good name of this shop (its first time i have been there and certainly seems like the best shop i've seen in shanghai with regards stock) and the staff did seem nice and helpful. i'm hoping that it was merely some sort of communication error coupled with the PC there genuinely not being able to read/write from my machine.
So, where to from here? i've got no idea. until it is sorted i have an obsolete machine basically. quite annoying. Is there anyone who has actually updated successfully in last month or so, and is now playing new games? im sure there must be. if so, where did you take it?
cheers |

I brought mine back again a few days ago and this time I told them 1.61 and brought the samsung firmware files they needed to flash the drive.
After them telling me to "come back tomorrow" over and over again I got fed up, especially since last night they told me I'd need to change the drive again (why the hell didn't you tell me this one of the many times I came in and you told me to come back tomorrow). I said **** it and told them to change the drive, if its not ready tonight I'm just grabbing it and walking out with it.
This shop is good for the newest games, but if you don't speak chinese it makes interaction with them almost impossible.
PS compusolutions: If I had a DL/DVD burner to burn that boot disc I would have never needed to go to that shop in the first place, I'd just burn my own games from the net. |

its hard to find good dvd dl's for less than 5 rmb tho, so not that easy choice... on top of that more work...
yea the shop is kinda weird they asked me to come back a day later too when i wanted to mod my box, then after my gf talked a bit to them they agreed to do it right away... maybe they just lazy or something.. |

Bought an xbox from them a month ago, no problems with most of the new games (I gather they were wav3). Couldnt play Tekkon and Modern Warfare 4, so they gave me a disk with the the latest crack. After playing the disk it now reads the game but it comes up with the message "In order to play this game you must apply the update. Do you want to update now?" I dont have xbox live, but due to the fact I bricked my wii last year I get scared when I see these messages. Can i update safely? Cheers. |

I think after all the hassle they put me through they finally realised that what I was telling them was right (there is no need to change drives, the samsung one I have can be flashed with 1.61 fine). When I went to pick it up today their attitude was a complete 180, they only charged me 50 RMB and I got a ton a free games thrown in when I tried to pay for them at the end.
Now crossing my fingers that, by not having my console online since the wave of bans started, I have been spared. I still think I'm going to wait a few days after the 11th to load the disc and connect to live, just to be sure. |
