| Post subject: Coming to Shanghai |
I will be moving ye first of the year to Shanghai. I need advice on how to bring "stocking up" items with me.. Shampoo, hair color, body wash, toiletries. I am not am international traveler yet, so I need pointers on how to bring a lot of these things with me on the first trip over, so I can be well stocked for a few months. Any help would be great:) |

How is easy - you put it in your suitcase. The what is more important - I bring loads of stuff on every trip, some of which I can't get here, some of which I can get here but is ludicrously expensive.
All our lists are different, but my lists are: coffee, tins of beans, Guinness, toiletries, vitamins, oxo cubes........(expensive here), and a dartboard, some medicines like lemsip, chocolate (UK kinds) decent crisps.....(can't get). |

Can I put any size or quantity in my checked baggage? And what would get flagged? what have you had taken out of your luggage? and at what point.. point A or B (B representing China? |

Hao da hao da Hao da..that means ok ok ok ......Most "Things" can be purchased in China....AND....most things that you purchase will be different than Home.....I bring my own shampoo....Advil.......deodorent.....I also bring large bags of Dunkin Donuts Coffee from BJ"s.................
I wouldnt worry about Hair Color....My guess is you will have your hair colored when you have it cut....It is very cheap.....and they are very good colorist.....
I have enterd China more than 100 times in the psat 25 years.... I have never had any luggage checked by customs or anyone else..... Bring as much as you like in your checked luggage.....
Shanghai is a great city.. The Chinese are wonderful people......You are in for a great experience....
I would be more concerned where to live than what to bring....Like I said this is a big city and there are lotsa great neighborhoods.......
Shanghai is nothing like the Motorcity....There is no street crime in Shanghai.... |

No, you can buy it in some pubs (very expensive, 65rmb or so) and also bottled in the imported section of a few shops (again, overpriced as it's imported.) I was talking about the draught Guinness in cans which I've never seen here - I always bring a dozen with me.
I would also put wine, champagne and decent scotch on my list - they're roughly double priced here. |

Big suitcase ..check!
Thank you very much for the info..I'm very excited and optimistic about moving.
I have gotten so many different takes on Shanghai.
I have been told that I can get a lot of big name/brand name items there in terms of toiletries and over the counter meds.
Thing is I don't use those brands. I am an all natural /organic kinda gal.
Anyone know if I can get Dr Hauschka skincare there? Or are there any Organic fresh markets, places to buy good bottles of wine, etc.. I am a creature comforts kinda person. I need to know how to prepare myself. Will I have to suck it up and convert to more mainstream things? |

one item that i always remind my friends who travel to asia: sunblock.
its very hard to find your particular brand, and its very expensive in asia. |

Fen,
as a female who recently moved to SH, do brign your own toiletries. Lots of it.
I am sure you will get some shipment allowance from the company, so dump all this into the shipment. bringing it as checked in luggage is not really practical as you will find that you have so much more things to bring closer to date. |

Deoderant (if you use a crystal, like I do, definitely bring an extra one w/ you until you can get back home to restock or have someone send you a care package!), Advil, BandAids, just some back-stock of what you typically have at home so that you have it while you're getting yourself sorted and finding what you need. You can buy organic, here, but expensive...Shanghai is a fascinating place! Go Blue! |

toiletries and medication are the items I always shop for when back in the USA... I would not count on much "organic" items here. If you do find them, they will be expensive. |

Fen,
Bring anything that you need for your first trip here, particularly your favourite brand and type of boothpaste, shampoo etc etc. You may end up searching for a few months before you get to find the local version of it here in Shanghai.
There will be good bottles of wine, but for organic items, they are available simply by the way they are labelled 'Organic' - (though seriously I am not sure if the labels are authentic). I don't recall seeing any organic specialty shops here.
If you need a shopping fix, you can always zoom by to Hong Kong, which is nearer than zooming back to the States.
Be prepared to pay for excess baggage allowance. |

What kind of 'stuff'? I buy books and CDs from Amazon in the UK and have delivered here from time to time and have never had a problem. |

You could buy any stuff online from China. That will be no problem. The only prob is it takes more time than you buy it locally. You could also buy most of the stuff you need in Shanghai. There are those stores somewhere. |

i don't think so.
gf looked into that, most of places (apparels, make-up) she shops at in USA, do not offer international shipping to china from their website. |
