| Post subject: unlocking iPhones brought from USA |
Hi,
I will be arriving soon with 2 iPhone 3GS's that were locked with At&T.
I was able to cancel the contract with AT&T (by paying $US175 for each phone). Does anyone happen to know how I can I get these phone unlocked and working after i arrive in Shanghai? OR, how to get them unlocked in General? and how get phone service on them after they are unlocked?
Thanks |

Why don't you go to AT&T and ask them to unlock the phones? You already paid them a cancellation fee. They will probably ask for a small unlocking fee. |

what is your firmware version?
maybe you are lucky.
blackra1n.com released new jailbreaking and unlocking tool yesterday which will jailbreak and unlock 3.1.2, baseband 05.11.07
http://www.blackra1n.com/
do not paid these chinese people to unlock your iphone. first it is not a rocket science that you will pay few ten usd or more to someone. second if they are not pros, they could mess up your 3gs.
i am using japanese 3g 16gb fw3.0 unlocked with redsnOw.
good luck. |

AT&T will never unlock the phones even after you are out of the contract, they are prohibited from doing so by agreement with apple.
you can google for those iphone jailbroken software, i think they have the crack for the 3G-S now. either that, you can buy one of those piggy-back SIM adapter, it works like unlocking.
i wouldn't let local chinese technicians attemp to unlock it. |

"piggy-back" a.k.a. turbo sim doesn't really work after firmware 2.2.1
it is better & safe to unlock it with crack software. |

3Gs iPhones are a pain to do, as Apple signs the firmware, and once go past the current hacked baseband/firmware point du jour, forgetaboutit, until the next crack / hack comes along. The newest 3Gs iphones have a different boot loader also, which isn't vulnerable to the usual hacks, so needs to be tethered to a computer to crack /unlock every time its powered on. That will change though with time.
3G and 2G are ok though.
I've been jailbreaking / unlocking 3 or 4 iPhones a week minimum for the year or two (since they came out essentially). Mostly from word of mouth, from people that didn't get an unlocked one, or got screwed over buying a US one in HK!
Personally I just tell clients buy a HK or Italy factory unlocked phone (from us, or from wherever), and don't dick about with US ones, its not worth the hassle.
I also have a JP 3G iPhone, but I got it for a great price (one of our suppliers bought 500 over from Japan, and we sold a good few for him), and I don't mind the hassle upgrading.
Note that I do also sell iPhones, so I'm obviously biased |

I bought my iPhone 3G in Shanghai about 5 months ago. Since that time i've always left it on Firmware/OS version 2.2
Almost everybody I speak to says I can't update the firmware/OS to 3.0 or whatever because there isn't as yet a hack for those versions. Other similar feedback was that it upgrades the baseband and that screws the phone or some such.
However i keep seeing all these redsn0w latest jailbreak cracks for the 3.0 OS etc........if China is so hacker happy how come none of these guys seem to think I can upgrade the phone to 3.1 or whatever is the latest and hack that (as the hacks exist because I seem them on rlslog pretty damn frequently)
Can somebody shed some light on this for me. |

Really pretty straight forward if you can read and follow the instructions. |

@angelus.
[You'll need a Mac for the following]
You're running an old baseband, so you'll need to do the following to hack yours.
Backup the phone. (Connect to iTunes, right click phone, choose backup, wait till done.)
Install 3.0 firmware for your phone 1,2,3.0 blah blah.ipsw (iTunes, restore shift/option update to choose firmware), restore.
DO NOT INSTALL A DIFFERENT VERSION, JUST 3.0. Let me emphasise not to screw up on this point.
Your phone will now be displaying the need to install a valid sim warning. Don't worry.
Download 3.1.2 firmware. 1,2,3.1.2 blahblah.ipsw, save to desktop or similar.
Open up PwnageTool (v3.1.4 currently), choose the firmware, and have it crack it. Choose activate, and whatever other options you need/want. Save the new cracked firmware to the desktop.
Now put it into DFU mode (Turn phone off, press power+home 10 seconds, let go power keep holdin home for another 10 seconds or so), and restore a 3.1.2 PwnageTool hacked firmware. (Again, option restore, choose firmware, and select the PwnageTool firmware).
It will now be running jailbroken 3.1.2
It still won't be working for phone calls.
Settings, general, network, disable 3G.
Connect to a wifi network, and install ultrasn0w from cydia.
Reboot.
You'll now have a working phone.
Also recommend add AppSync 3.1 from cydia.hackulo.us (cydia, settings, add repository.., then search for AppSync).
Restore the backup in iTunes (right click phone on left, restore from backup).
Takes me about 30 minutes usually.
The above ONLY applies to 3G iPhones.
3Gs, and 2G have slightly different methods.
3Gs is not easy to unlock these days, you need to save firmware hashes etc, and older firmwares are not signed etc etc, so mafan...
Files to do all this, and older firmwares etc are on my site here: http://www.iphonesim.cn/files |
