| Correct. We live on 4800 a month. We make more than that, but our actual monthly expenses total 4800 RMB or less. Again, our lifestyle isn't nearly as lavish as some of our American friends, but there's a huge difference between living comfortably, and living extravagantly. |
on a 2nd thought, its doable.
met and chatted with this guy in beijing, who is a pianist plays at the bar at westin hotel. from new york, said he has a "sick" 3 bed room apt all for 3200 rmb, everything else like eating is cheap too, he loves it in beijing cuz its a much better life than he had in brooklyn.
i am glad ur living comfortably and content larry.
happy ppl make me happy |

Most of my friends and guys I date are on big expat packages (driver, my apartment could easily fit into their shoe closet, etc.), so sometimes I'm embarrassed to tell them how much I struggle to meet them at certain restaurants or whatever. Nobody is ever invited to my place, ha. That's my own pride though--I was dating a guy for two months and we split everything 50/50, but he chose the activities and it pretty much killed me financially. He ordered a bottle of red wine at an Italian restaurant and I nearly crawled under the table clutching my wallet. |
funny, but kudos to you.
next time maybe hang with men w/ chinese descent, usually they will be happy to pick up the tab, its in their culture not letting women pay.
so you are moving back to uk next yr cuz you aren't satisfied with the employment situation? you only planed to stay here for 3 yrs no matter what? |

Thanks to all..
And don't sweat the comment in my topic vesper.. I am an independent gal in the us and its killing my pride to have to depend on my Husband for all this when we move to Shanghai. Grrrrr
2 week trips home per year.
We live VERY modestly here in Mich. We have a tiny home, 2 cars that have no car pymnts. We do like good food, good wine/ beer, and I like my skincare stuff. Other than that I hope we'll be ok on his salary.
The salary is $73K us, with a housing allowance, driver allowance. shipping allowance, 2 |

And we are childless..so we don't have to worry about all the kid stuff. The job will be on the West side of the river about 40 min outside the city. Allegedly! |

Any ABCs wanna be my sugar daddy?
Fen09, I'm also originally from Michigan. I was born in the beautiful city of Flint and went to school in Grand Rapids.
I suggest you join the Shanghai Dolls expat ladies group, it's a great way to meet other women to meet for dinner or events. They also give advice on salons and other things which typically aren't listed on the very male-oriented moving to Shanghai guides. |

now, to start a thread within the thread. paying stuff for women is fine if she's your girlfriend or wife. if not why do it???? wait a minute, fwerff or anybody, don't answer i know what you're gonna say.. BUT the truth is those are stupid, sexist explanations and it's also gonna make you LESS attractive to the girl.
vesper what kind of career are you pursuing? |

Sorry, ah well...I like Shanghai and it's good crazy fun with sexy times, but my internship has ended and I'll take the HSK next spring, so after that I don't know what I'd be staying for. My current job isn't helping my career or my savings account, and I find it tiresome that I rarely have close friends here (people move away so often) and it also means several years spent boyfriendless.
I'm hoping to get my LLM in the UK, move my career along and settle down a bit. |

i don't know what you think my reason might b.
i do it cuz its done that way all around me, i take it as part of the asian culture. i see it as a courtesy and generosity. i am not doing that to earn points with the girl, and i don't see how that makes me less attractive, NOT that i do it to attract them anyway.
it only apply to restaurant, bars and clubs. not shopping or anything else.
if i am the only guy in the group, i will pay for everyone. if there are other guys, we might split between the guys, but if they are cheap a$$, i will pay.
next time maybe my gf is hanging with her female friends (who i paid for last time), and the friend's bf will pick up tabs.
so in the end it all comes out even anyway.
thats how i see it. |

I double majored in behavioural science (criminology, psychology and all that) and business. If I was in the west I'd probably be working in govt or law enforcement, which really isn't an option here. I had been looking to see if I could proof-read or similar in Chinese law firms, but nothing has been available. Now I'm just looking into general office jobs for the next year. |

Fen09, trust me, with everything you're getting, you'll likely have a more "privileged" lifestyle than in MI. Everything has its pluses and minuses, but overall, it's pretty good. I do miss the MetroParks though, I came here from Royal Oak.
vesper, I went to school in Flint! 5 special years. Lovely city... |

Vesper and buckplankchest.. I grew up in Berkley, and lived in Royal Oak as a single gal for 7 years. I now live in Fenton (near Flint), my Husband already owned a home here so I picked up and moved (Green Acres is not the place for me!). I am excited to live a more city kinda life style. Though I understand completely that Shanghai is on a whole new level as cities go.
Thanks for the Shanghai Dolls info.. I will definitely be willing to join |
