The tailor shops at the Science & Technology Museum will be the best place for him to have his shirts made. Price will be around rmb 80-90 depending on fabric. Access is easy via line 2 subway. I find they do especially nice work with special requests such as adding hidden placket to hide the buttons on a mans shirt, little tabs to secure collar, US style or European style with darts or tapered fit. Bringing in a sample shirt for style or special features is always a good idea. |

Because the tailor shops over expanded at S & T when offered cheap space for rent and as the economy worsened, they did not have as many customers as expected so they need to discount their prices to be more competitive than the fabric markets in order for them to get any business at all and continue to stay in business. |

Yes, I had a tux made here. Was fine as I only needed to wear it once. |

You will have several stalls to choose from that will have Tux on display. If possible, don't go on the weekend as it is harder to bargain on days when they tend to have a few more customers. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the best days to score great deals. |

For all that have had something made - what is a good deal? I 'get' there are degrees of the deal factoring in garment details, material, volume (number of items purchased), return client, etc. But for a first-timer what is the ball-park discount percentage one should shoot for when negotiating? |

I bought a tux there as well.
600 rmb including a wingtip collar shirt.
I have had two suits made there now, and don't like either of them- it's fine if you want a cheap suit, but definitely not for everyday wear from my experience.
You can get very nice tailored shirts from the nicer tailors in town for $au60. For me that's still half the price of a good shirt at home, and something that feels good and will last.
The fabric market is about the same standard as S&T from what we have had made, maybe fabric market is slightly better, but they are a similar standard. |

There's no such thing as a ballpark percentage discount. I might get quoted 700 rmb and you might get quoted 1700 rmb. It depends on your appearance and how experienced you appear to be as well as your skin colour. So it's better to deal in absolutes and I think 500-600 rmb is pretty close to the going rate for suits in S&T or fabric market. |

I think this is right- I've had loads of colleagues go to the S&T market to buy a watch.
"It should cost 100-150RMB" I tell them
they come back the next day, I ask them what they paid
"250"
"But I told you how much it should cost?"
"Yeah but she started at 800,000 so I got a great discount"
the starting price is totally based on how stupid they think you are and has nothing to do with what the thing is worth. |

Chingiskhan/Swiss James - Thanks. I'm probably a rare breed in that I am a woman who HATES shopping. But shopping here is a time honored past-time, a sport, if you will; the whole affair just wears me out. |

Man this spring I'm getting a white linen suit made. I'm gonna look like Gregory Peck on acid or something.
I also want to get a velvet jacket made, a purple one.
That's the great thing about the Fab Mkt. You just take down a few album covers from the 80's and tell the bloke 'Make me look like this, G'. |

People slate the Fab Mkt but if you choose carefully you can get some decent stuff done.
Avoid Judy. |
