Post subject: Qingdao in November?

Qingdao in, perhaps mid November? Not particularly looking for beach activities, swimming, etc., though. Looking to spend a day in Mt. Laoshan, and couple days check out the city, and food. Is it advisable weather-wise? Or perhaps Xiamen is better for November weekend getaway? Thanks!

well qingdao is gonna b cold. xiamen will b warmer.
i personally dislike cold, so i always tend to go south.

not too much to do in either city, few days will be plenty.
qingdao is got laoshan, and beer street.
xiamen is got gulangyu island, and seafood night market. and this street filled with bars and cafe by water front, next to marco polo hotel, supposedly a happening place, but i went there once in afternoon once at night, both times its dead, nothing going on at all.

based on our two winters in Qingdao- it can be nasty cold and windy;

also Laoshan in the winter - meh, it's a man-made walking path through a bunch of rocks to a waterfall that doesn't exist anymore because of drought, it will also be pretty barren with leaves off the trees- depending on the weather that day pretty cold - imho nothing really special this time of year

the city itself - again wind is a huge issue and as many places that give Qingdao its unique charm are summer related and are now closed- it isn't going to be anything real special

but I guess it depends on what you want from your Shanghai escape - if you want something rejuvenating from the wet of Shanghai winter then why go someplace that's definately a closed-for-the-season summer town (Qingdao) - my vote is Xiamen (also based on our travel experience)

qingdao, not a lot to do, two days will already be fine. food is nothing special (rather disappointing really, much worse than shanghai) although there is one specific place that makes the best dumplings in all of china!!!!!

Qingdao - is not a place to go, for sure. There dumplings are so-so, far away from Harbin's ones.

no no im not talking abt qingdao dumplings.. im talking abt this ONE specific place

Nice Xiamen pics, root. Yea, I'm observing the weather forecast, and I don't think Qingdao will make it in mid Nov. Early Nov, and we're already looking at highs of 15, and single digits for lows. I guess Qingdao can wait.

So, Xiamen it is. I guess Nov Xiamen would still look like Shanghai nowadays huh. And oh, I'll keep Harbin dumplings in mind -- thinking of going there in winter too. I heard the "Ice City" is nice.

I like Xiamen much better. and there's a 5 * hotspring hotel , Xiamen riyuegu hot spring.
Although it's 30 mins away from the beach , the hotel offers the shuttle bus every once 30 mins.
And the spring in the hotel is so perfect, combined with the massage, ideally the place for hooneymoom.
And the whole duration 3 days enough!. the tickes in Nov from shanghai to xiamen are on great sale.

Xiamen food is delicious, one of best in China.

I prefer Qingdao food. At first, there's a lot of Korean restaurants, I love Korean food. If you know some local Chinese, they will show you small spots with delicious seafood! Also I loved Mongolian hotpot I had in Qingdao, Japanese food not bad at all. And beer! It's not that crappy Qingdao beer you can buy here at any supermarket, it's fresh, absolutely different taste! Xiamen food was too sweet to me, but some Taiwanese and Guandonese restaurants was ok there.
As for seaside and beaches - Xiamen is better. It's sandy, not rocky beaches. Gulangyu island was nice, I liked old buildings and fresh air. What else...There's Botanical garden, parks in Xiamen. I think 4 days is the longest time I can stay there...And I'm not sure if I remember it correctly, but the street with a lot of cafes is Guanren Lu
