Post subject: Can't connect to shared DSL in the office

Hiya,

Problems over problems its driving me mad, I am close to a nervous breakdown. Non of the poeple in the office can help me, even switching the computers language to Chinese didnt help all they are interested in is "my little QQ farm" it sucks big time and I cant connect to the internet.

Are there some special functions on Chinese share office connection? I have a European Vista Premium SP2 with all updates installed + a Chinese language pack. Can please someone help me before I smash my netbook on the wall?

Thanks so much !

Probably their IT didn't set up DHCP services.
Go to a working computer (assuming windows).

click start, run
type CMD
press enter

You should have a DOS window.

Type IPCONFIG /all

note the IP Address, the Gateway, and the subnet mask.

Typically this will be something like

192.168.0.xx (that computers IP address, where xxx is a random number above 100)
192.168.0.1 (the router)
255.255.255.0 (the subnet mask)

write that down.

Now pick a number between 2 and 255

and try to ping that number

eg if their ip was 192.168.0.somenumber

ping 192.168.0.39

or their ip was 10.0.0.xx
ping 10.0.0.85

If you *DONT* get a reply back that means that ip address is free.
If the number you picked is used, try again with another number.
Keep trying till you get one thats unused.

Write that number down.

Now go back to your computer, click on the network settings, and set your address as per the numbers you got above.

Set the DNS to the following:

Primary: 208.67.222.222
Secondary: 208.67.220.220

Assuming you didn't screw up, you should be able to ping the router from your computer.
If that works, then you should be ok for internet.

There is everything, even DHCP Services. I can establish a connection but it is not stable it constantly breaks up and the cooling system is running like hell. There is probably a connection for 2minutes then it stops, again connection, stop, low connection, high connection and so forth. At home I have also DSL and no problems at all. How much do you charge for such a service man? Cant you come to our office and have a look? The people here are driving me mad. I downloaded a Vista language pack traditional Chinese and still they asked me "where is the network icon" which was clearly indicated in Chinese. I mean is there any sense in this? Then I downloaded a language pack simplified Chinese and showed them the Network icon with the Chinese description and they still said "what?" ............... whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Probably would help if you were more accurate with your question.
I can't connect is totally different to "I connect, and my fan goes nuts, and the internet disconnects after a few minutes."

Sounds more like a virus though - especially if your CPU is overheating, and disconnecting.
Scan with 360safe, and download Hijackthis or ProcessExplorer, and see whats running, you're probably spamming half of China from your PC...

I also don't do Vista.

Haven't been impressed with Prevx at all, suggest remove that.
I've seen it cripple machines with its scanning.

Also, remove a shedload of all the thinkpad stuff. You don't need a 10th of that.
Less stuff loading the better/faster.

Roxio is also a big heap of doodoo, remove any of that from the startup

What video card do you have? You load 2 sets of drivers assist programs - nvidia and ati.
I would think one or the other, not both..

MS Security - hoho. Remove. Their track record is abysmal.

Mostly too much security stuff loaded, and crap loaded. Probably one of those is interacting badly with one of the others.

Strongly suggest remove *everything* from the startup, and only add in the stuff you absolutely require.

Also, as some of the latest viruses are pretty much invisible, you need to boot from an external DVD and scan the computer. Suggest download on of the many windows liveiso's and scan from one of those. Some really sneaky stuff coming out that I've seen - going back to older style infections - boot sector viruses that delete themselves post boot, patch the windows kernel so they're invisible, then write themselves back on shutdown. Essentially invisible to standard virus tools running on an infected box.

Yeah thanks for that mate, but I think that is were the problem is grounded. I am not a geek at all, I probably know how to get all that stuff on my notebook and even how to remove it but thats it. Everything else is just frightening to me. So how much would you charge if you would do that for me? I dont know what a video card is? I have a graphics card, a Gforce 9300M GS . Initially I had Avira - Antivir on my notebook but when the problems started the software didnt update any loner. So I removed it and installed the other stuff. Then the problems started again and I recovered the whole system. After a week everything started again. The fan only goes nuts at work. Here at home everythings perfectly fine.

Ok, so if the video card is an nvidia, remove the ATI stuff in the startup.
Or not... my brain obviously read ATK as ATI, so just ignore that one!

Most probably its going to be due to ThreatFire/Prevx screwing each other over imho.
Neither are any good.

Given that the OP's computer is a laptop, can I suggest that he just contact Computer Solutions directly and bring the laptop to their offices to just have someone clean it up. Sounds lke the IT folks at the OP's employer is shite so probably best sttart (my opinion) would be to come in with a clean slate on the laptop then it will be more clear if the issues are laptop-side related versus network-side related. Computer Solutions has helped numerous folks I know, myself included with both software and hardware issues and can save you alot of headaches.

They offered me a Chinese Lenovo but I refused since I need to have an English Excel and Powerpoint available. These are necessary for me in order to do my job. So I use my own nb also because I have Camtasia on it which is a big help with ppt. The apps. referred to were just recently installed, killed the Prevx yesterday also the Th!nkPad Presentation Manager, now the nb is as silent as a fish. Love it !!! Havent been to the office though. Some girl caught the flu and is now in hospital. As you see I am haunted... problems everywhere. But still - I love my life, its so exciting!!! Thanks heaps for the help.

I do't drive a BMW, I don't have my people get together with your people so we can do lunch some time and I wouldn't touch Power Point with Merry Anus' dick Sad

If you are in a company that uses PowerPoint, run. Run fast, run far before you get infected with Biff and Muffy Disease.
