Friend had a coat made, to ankles - similar details...was supposed to be 'double cashmere' and lined. Cost was 750¥.
Upon inspection of the finished coat I have my suspicions about the double cashmere claim, or that it is cashmere at all. And while the coat details look nice, there is absolutely 'no bones', no inner structure; no interfacing or padding of any kind to help the coat keep it's shape. As for the custom fit - my friend could have faired as well with a standard off the rack.
This is my only experience with custom tailoring, but IMHO I find the majority of tailoring to be of poor quality from the many dozens of garments I've inspected within the fabric booths. I am happily awaiting to be proved wrong. I would love to have some things made. |

yeah, especially cos i dont see the point in getting a coat custom-made. dont know places that beat the prices though! |

Hydro, are you from the US? Going back in December? Burlington Coat Factory would have that, name brand, $100. I know this doesn't help you for here, but... |

About rmb 380. Take this image to the Science and Technology tailor section and show it around to the guys that do these kinds of coats. That is where I believe you will get the best buy. I would expect them to quote about rmb 600 but you should be able to bargain down to about rmb 380. |

380¥ for real? I was with my friend and it took 15 minutes of going at it to get to a price. This was at Shiliupu on Dongmen Lu. This was her first time purchasing from this vendor. With her linebacker shoulders, her overcoat was as large as any man's.
From what I've learned from others so far; I will insist on a small sample of the fabric that was agreed upon, and bargain harder. But in the end, at the majority of these places, aren't we really bargaining for sweat shop couture vs quality custom tailoring?
Hydro - for 380¥ you can't lose. Let us know how you make out. |

Has anyone attempted to hold a reverse auction in the stalls of the fake market?
For example, say 3 shops in a row are selling similar t-shirts. When they all shout out "come buy t-shirts" you stand there and ask for a price from the first one, then the 2nd, etc. and keep driving down the price. The difference between this and shopping around is that you have all 3 shop owners standing there, such that they can all hear all of the "bids".
Seems like it would be interesting to try this, but curious if it would be done. |

doesnt work and why would u do it anyway.
u dont trick them into selling it to u for cheap. u dont persuade them to give it to u for a cheap price because of ur skills. u show them that ure not a donkey, that's all. they will sell it to u for any price that makes sense to them economically unless u're being a major ass.
of course a lot depends on circumstance and how u present urself but dont think that u can put pressure on these people that way. |

Someone mentioned they are all in cahoots - good call =) I am pretty sure this is correct. Still, from an academic standpoint, the reason price-fixing cartels fail is because someone cheats.
I just got back from qingdao where clothes cost about 1/2 what the going rate seems to be here (based on my prices and what others have posted).
As for other poster... Simmer down now.

Not being an ass, not trying to "trick" them, not trying to show off skills. Just trying to see what the actual "economic" price would be. Their incentive is to bid each other down until they reach the point where it isn't worth dealing with me for the profit. I'll let the "donkey" comment pass. As I walk through they try every technique they know of to get a higher price. This was something I wondered about as a technique to get a lower price (though obviously one that was still profitable to them.)

Agree with this 100%. It is largely how you present yourself. I was actually curious if anyone had presented themselves *this* way. Again, not really about "pressure" as they just have to refuse to participate. |

ok, sorry if my reply seemed rude, no hard feelings (that donkey comment was definetely not directed at you either).
it doesnt work because it doesnt make sense ecenomically to outbid each other. they will refuse every time.
btw in case you haven't noticed they all cooperate with each other, sell each others stuff etc. i know a guy who owns 4 stores in the fabric section of S&T alone. |

They all cooperate with each other not only because vendors own several shops in each market but many of the similar shops are also owned by relatives, girl friends, boy friends, kissing cousins, etc.
The only thing that is important is that each transaction is made between a willing buyer and a willing seller. If you are happy with your purchase, it really does not matter that other people paid more or less for the same item. People make different salaries for the same job just like people pay different prices for the same item. Someone will always be getting a better deal than you in life while someone else gets a worse deal. Life is way too short to agonize about the inequalities that life serves us. Those that agonize and obsess over these matters lead miserable lives. |

Aye it's not about price, it's about value. We all have different ideas on how much something is worth.
I play it hard and fast though, I don't like dilly dallying about when it comes to bartering. It wastes precious shopping time!!! I say my price twice then walk away, 9 out of 10 times it works!!!!
If they don't call after me and I really wanted it, I'll give it half an hour, go back then let the mincing around with prices begin. I left my pride in England, that helps! |

I went today to the AP Plaza in S&T, there i saw many RC card, big ones, also one had that ferrari F1 car also. That was first quoted as 350RMB. How much should i pay for this RC car ?? What other toys can be bought from here.
Also how much should i pay for a small RC helicopter. Very small one. Not a big one. |

We paid 175 RMB for two "North Face" 65 ltr rucksacks at Nanjjng Lu market - used them on one trip and they are still in one piece so far so think that was a fair price? |
