Well, maybe native Canadian English speakers. Not that there's anything wrong with Canadians or even Canadiens, eh!. Listening to CCTV can be comical. It can also serve as an expeditious drinking game; gan bei each time political doublespeak is spewed. |

But an apostrophe can and is used to indicate the possessive, right? e.g
that dog's bone
my sister's boyfriend
it's a dog's life
But I think the form of possessive Leida is referring to is correct, but which is a different type of possessive than the above. e.g.
at its worst
2 miles from its destination
How on earth one explains this to Chinese students I don't know! |
"it's" is always either "it is" or "it has", no exceptions. "its" is a possessive pronoun.
"it's" is never ever possessive, if you are using it as such you are wrong. |

i dont even bother plugging the aerial into my TV anymore - the channels are so boring. I have been in Japan and even Saudi Arabia where the channels seem more interesting than the stuff they seem to show here (war films, strange talent competitions, strange people wearing pig heads). |

CCTV 9 is made for non-Chinese speakers as wheelchair is made for handicap people, it's all propaganda (as other CCTV channels of equal measure).
learn Chinese and swap TV time for socialising time, it's always quite the opposite than what you can learn from the little brainwashing machine. |

Yeah that Aussie guy is quite old..I think he came here to retire 20 years ago and CCTV9 still have him working! I find the weather people odd. Like that girl with the dark hair, blunt fringe..and she's Scottish?? And some English guy whose voice goes up and down...And the Aussie blonde chick who always wears suits - jacket and mini skirt. She has the real "radio announcer" voice going on.
I had a 8 mth break from China, first night back turn on CCTV9...I'd seen the story they were showing...URGHH. Haven't turned it back on since. |

@Blondesands, nice oversized sunglasses. I know you have probably heard that before a ton of times, but what the heck, make it ton+1. |

Are you sure? He was the weather man on ABC (Australian TV) for years. Heard an interview that after he retired he applied for the job in CCTV9 as a joke, not expecting to get it. |

Edwin Mahler (born in NZ, worked for Austalian ABC TV) is OK
His English, in spite of his Aussie time, is quite well. I like his "再见" at the end of the news.
Regarding the sports journalists:
Tony Perkins ( the black one): perfect English but too hyperactive.
Jonas Gilbart: strange guy, is he gay ? |

I'm relieved I am not the only one who cannot stand watching CCTV 9. Their lips movements are unreal, it's really slow, uncomfortable and unnatural to watch. Why not have the foreign presenters read the news or find some people who have studied English abroad and speak with greater fluency? The James guy is the one who had British accent, right? I pitied him! The other accents are very decided American and with the missing articles, plural endings: it's just annoying. CCTV5 is the only thing worth watching on Chinese TV. |

I always wonder if they shouldn't add English sub-titles in addition to the Chinese ones for their news programmes. |
