| Post subject: housing and living allowances, french concession homes |
How do companies decide how much the living allowance should be? Is there a typical ratio between housing and living allowances?
Is anyone here familiar with those charming french concession homes? I will be living alone, and am wondering if they have properly renovated units with 1-2 bedrooms catering to singles. What would the rent be like? |

Western companies (and employees trying to negotiate packages) often use the Hewitt expat compensation package published annually by AmCham. If you have a friend working for a multinational, you might want to ask them if they can get their hands on a copy.
Hopefully others can give you more info, but I know that for $1500 USD/month you can get a great place in an old house in the former French concession. (I'm sure you can get one for less -- that's just the figure I know. LOTS of looking will help you find a better deal. |

It depends a lot on how senior your position is, whether or not you have family, and if they are relocating you from overseas. Relocating from inside China, there is a tendency to offer less.
I have heard of some great 1 bedrooms and studio carved out of some of the older homes and renovated. I know of one person who moved into such a place a couple years ago, 1 BR, 80 sqm nicely renovated ground floor with nice courtyard. He paid about 10000 a month then. That was considered a deal. Finding a good deal is matter of luck as well as getting out with a good agent and doing the work of looking. |
