Paul, why not come through Hong Kong, see the city, and pick up a 1 year multi entry F visa there for something on the order of 700-800 HKD? Probably cheaper than using an agency (maybe on par when you factor in the cost of the extra plane ticket, esp. if you go via Shenzhen).

Every company that can employ you has the obligation to give you a work permit. I have certainly seen many positions advertised where they state "work visa provided". I am not in teaching circles, so I am not sure how easy it is to get a job at the moment, but it doesn't seem too hard, especially since you have some qualifications.
