| Post subject: Chinese Visa. Border Run |
I have found a great way (at least to me) to apply for a Chinese Visa out of China. This recommendation is more worthwhile when you travel in pairs and stay for 3 days. Also it's a great place to retreat of you have been to Hong Kong before and not planning to shop.
1. Book a flight to Shenzhen. Airfare is more than affordable and it's only a short flight away.
2. At the Shenzhen airport, take the train that goes to Hong Kong. Alight at the first stop which is in the New Territories in Hong Kong.
3. From there you can either take a bus or a cab to Harbour Plaza Resort City. Cab will cost you HKD 190. Bus is much cheaper.
Harbour Plaza Resort City is a 4 star hotel. The rooms are the size of a suite, equipped with a big fridge, microwave, stove, living and dining area. Service is excellent. The hotel has 2 swimming pools, gym, sauna, massage and tennis court too. It is connected to a huge mall where there are banks, restaurants, huge supermarket etc.
4. Book the hotel at www.asiatravel.com. The rate is HKD 550 per night. If you stay for 2 nights, you will get the third night free.
Pm me if you want to take a look at the pictures I took.
New Territories might be far from the Kowloon or Hong Kong's city area. The hotel provides hourly shuttle to and from Tsim Sha Tsui. Journey by shuttle is HKD 18. The shuttle bus is very comfortable, air-conditioned and you get to see amazing views of Hong Kong on the way to Tsim Sha Tsui.
Tsim Sha Tsui has an MTR line and you can take it to anywhere else you want to go. The MTR is very well connected. Get a tourist MTR farecard for HKD 50. It lasts 24 hours and you get unlimited travel with it.
5. The travel agent you should you to is Japan Travel Agency, located at Granville Road. It's HKD $850 for a 1 year visa and you can collect it the next day.
I have the full list of types of visa and their costs
Granville Road is a 20 minutes walk from the shuttle bus drop off point. You can have lunch, sight-see or shop on your way to the agency.
Pm me for step-by-step directions and pictures
If you decide to go through Hong Kong International airport, you can do so too. As part of the asiatravel's hotel package, you will also get 2 way transfer for 2 person.
I have consolidated all these information, directions, pictures, contact addresses and telephone numbers in a MS Word document. So feel free to ask me for it. I find this to be the most efficient and enjoyable border run. Cheap too.Hope this can help you peeps.
Cost Breakdown
Hotel - HKD 1200
Airfare to HKG (int'l) - CNY 1800
Transport - HKD 80
p/s - I don't have the fare for Shenzhen and train.

You can also take the bus, boat or subway (KCR) from Shenzhen into HK. It is not unusual to get air ticket for as little as 750 either. |

The bus ride from Shenzhen Airport to Lo Wu at the HK-China border is 25 bucks and takes about an hour and ten minutes, departs every hour on the hour both ways.
The 1st stop on the Rail departing from Lo Wu is Sheung Shui. A bus to Tin Shui Wai is about 10 dollars (HK), takes about 40 minutes. Tin Shui Wai is on the West Rail (KCRC) which connects to Tsim Sha Tsui (MTRC) via Mei Foo interchange - takes under 40 minutes and about 20 dollars.
World's best subways? Here is it! |

Why put yourself through all that trouble?? For the same price, you can get a package that will land you directly in Hong Kong and includes 2 nights at a hotel in Kowloon or on the Island. Check out Dragon Air.

Check out the available packages. |

(1) Both MTRC and KCRC do not run 24hr services unless on special nights like X'mas Eve, Chinese New Year, etc.
(2) There are a lot of special offers on SHA-HK air ticket or air ticket+hotels packages, one thing you always have to look out for is the airport tax is included or not, I think HK airport tax is HKD 380. One of the travel agents in HK is offering HKD 998 return from Shanghai to HK on China Eastern right now until end of the month, they'll deliver the ticket to you in Shanghai. I don't have the info. right now, PM me (with e-mail alert, please?) for more information.
(3) I always buy the Dragon Air packages when I go to HK. It's a one stop shop, services are much better than China Eastern and you can do telephone check-in, they sometimes even throw in airport transfer during low seasons. One drawback is that their prices are based on twin share, it's a lot more expensive if you're traveling alone.
(4) Any hotel in downtown HK is expensive, the hotel ratings are international ratings (unlike the stars they have in China), so if Autorock says it's a 4 star hotel, it's a very nice hotel. I haven't seen a 4 star hotel costing as little as HKD 400 a day for a years (except during the SARS period).
(5) I would call it "Back to Civilisation" instead of "Border Run"!!! |
