I'm looking to change jobs in the coming months, but remain in shanghai. How do I go about switching the Z visa I have with my current firm to a Z visa with another firm? Anyone have any idea on how this is done?

The Z visa in your passport remains unaffected, you only use this for getting back into country if you leave.
You must get the Alien Employment License and Foreign Resident Permit altered to reflect the new employers details. You just go through the same procedure as before, minus the medical. Go to the employment office and then 333 Wusong Road.
