| Post subject: where to buy eye-glasses? |
Wondering where is the best place to get new specs. Is there an equivalent of Specsavers here? I have seen in the fake market frames for sale and even the equipment to get a prescription for the lens. Any good/bad experiences? |

Go to the eyeglasses market behind the Shanghai Railway Station. It's amazing...billions and billions of frames. I just got new lenses set in 2 weeks ago. |

I think I overpaid. I paid 200 kuai for my lenses, but I have REALLY bad eyesight (-6 and -7.5) and I wear half frames, so I always pay extra for the thin lenses. I read an article about SH in the New Yorker that referenced the market; in it they said you can negotiate lenses and non brand frames for about 150-200 kuai. |

Thanks. Can the lenses be trusted - anti-glare, anti-scratch, and I have an astigmatism in one eye which would require coke-bottle lenses if I don't get them thinned down. Do you think they can manage this? |

I have an astigmatism too. I can see quite clearly out of my glasses now. They told me my lenses have UV protection, dunno about the scratches. I have no idea if they actually are UV proof, but I know lots and lots of people who have gone there, so they must be pretty reliable. |

Make sure your eyes feel right when you put on your newly set lenses. I bought a pair of prescription lenses some years ago from a supposedly reputable place. I felt dizzy when I put them on and the lady said that is normal for new lenses. I highly questioned that so wore my old glasses and took the new ones to the dealer in Taipei who readjusted the new lenses. The lenses were installed lopsided....so it is good I didn't use them or else my vision would have gotten worse. |

Also a place in the Science and Technology Museum fake market in the "C" area that is quite good. Had glasses made at the glass market and other ones at the STM. The STM ones were better and I too have astigmatism. Paid 200 RMB. Sorry I don't have the exact store number but it is definately in the "C" area and has two entrances in two different isles. Only has glasses and nothing else. |

thanks for the advice. I took the plunge today and bought glasses today at the Sanye glasses market. It would take them 20 minutes to make if it weren't for my unusual prescription. Instead it will take 5 days - I hope they turn out alright - I'll let you all know. |

I just picked up glasses from Greatwave Glasses at S&T. Located in A-1. I was just in Shanghai for business this week and I also needed some sunglasses. Picked out some nice frames and added the tinted lenses. My prescription is not that strong but I'm not even sure if that matters. I paid 200 RMB (they started with asking for 1000). 15 minutes to make them and they seem great. The only thing that worries me is whether there is UV coating - they assured me that there is... but I think I will try to see if this can be checked when I get back to the states. |

Are you the same harison who was asking about where to buy glasses from recently? Is your shop that bad that you buy your own somewhere else? If so, your shop must be really shiit. |

Maybe they should work together...
"I have problem of going to shiit hairdressers and now my hair looks bad".
"Don't worry, try my glasses and even hair cut by Benson will look good". |

Haha. Their "marketing" departmetns are not smart enough to think of such a collaboration. They're still patting themselves on the backs at having out smarted those laowais with their "where can i get glasses" thread. |
