If you have the proper type of visa and documentation of being paid in RMB then you should be able to go to a Bank of China and change the RMB to pounds. Conversely, if you have already converted pounds to RMB within the past six months and have the receipt to show it, you will be able to take the receipt to the bank and exchange up to that amount.
Another option is to find a person who has pounds and needs RMB. Private and simple. Without the use of paperwork and banks. Usually someone who is paid a monthly salary in all pounds will need to change money.
A final option is to find a moneychanger that you trust. You will have to make arrangements in advance because the likelyhood that he will just happen to have pounds (especially if the quantity is great) with him is slim. Please note that this option is not legal but done all the time.
