Post subject: Need your advice-Concordia v.s. British International School

We are moving to Shanghai in June next year. I am looking for an international school for my 4 years old and 6 years old boys. My friend in Shanghai recommend Concordia and British International School for my 2 boys. They are on waiting list for both schools now.

Can anyone share with me your comments on both schools? I would like my kids to find a school with excellent teachers/syllabus/environment.

Many Thanks!!!

depends where you're going to be living

no child is going to be happy if they have a one hour journey to school

Also depends on which system u prefer. Concordia is based on American curriculum while BISS is of cos British based. I have visited both schools recently and am impressed with both schools' environment. U might want to find out which one will be easier for transition and closer to the education system back home should u decided to move back to your home country in future.

Post subject: Need your advice-Concordia v.s. British International school

Thanks you all for your kind reply.

I will be living somewhere near Jinqiao area so Concordia will be very close to where we live.

My sons are studying in British education system school now so we applied both British International school and Dulwich couple months ago.

We are on waitlist for all 3 schools but the chance to get into Dulwich is low. According to the administrator at Dulwich, it might take more than 1+ year for my sons to get into the school. Students on their top waiting list are those who submitted application in year 2004!!!

We originally plan to let our son to get into BISS to study for 1 year and then wait for our turn to get into Dulwich. But it will take 40 minutes to get to BISS from Jinqiao area. So we decided to put our priority on Concordia first and then transfer to Dulwich when space come available.

Similar to Minnesotamom, I would like to know the difference between US and British education system. Will my son have difficulty to adopt to different education system if we switch in between (US to British) in the future? Should I stay with British education system and study in BISS first? But I heard Concordia has better syllabus and teachers. Tough Call!!

You should talk to someone in admissions at both schools to get the answers to these curriculum questions, rather than relying on forum opinions. I'll bet they could put the differences "in a nutshell" easily and more importantly, accurately.

In high school, the continuity in curriculum between here and "home" becomes quite important. (Not as much so for lower school, but still important. )

We are extremely happy with Concordia. We have friends and neighbors at Dulwich. Totally different atmospheres and curriculum-just depends on what you are after. Just about all of the international schools in Shanghai have good reputations, although have not heard much about BISS. It is new and rather REMOTE, as you noted.

Good luck!

My children attended school in the UK when they were the ages of yours. In the younger grades the British curriculum pushes a little harder than a typical US curriculum (though this definitely varies from place to place). At age 4 my younger daughter was learning to read and was at the same level my older daughter had been in the US at age 7 in public schools. By age 9-10 it all seems to even out. I would be sure to pay particular attention to the reading curriculum at both schools to get a comparison.
