Pirate DVD shop serving expats shut down

SHANGHAI'S cultural authority raided a "coffee shop" on Zhenning Road yesterday which was believed to be selling pirated DVDs to foreigners, the Youth Daily reported.
The authority seized 700 piracy DVDs in "Ka De Club" and fined the boss at least 10,000 yuan (US$1,245). Last year, the shop was punished once, but it resumed its business soon after, the report said.
It sold DVDs for 10 yuan each, compared with other sales spots that sell them for 5 yuan. Foreigners bought their DVDs because of the variety and good quality. Some foreigners even drove to the shop with their families.
A foreigner told the newspaper that he used to buy DVDs in another "Ka De Club" on Maoming Road S. But recently, authorities have been checking in on it more frequently, so he switched to its branch on Zhenning Road.
"This shop is very popular among foreigners, I knew about it from bars on Maoming Road," the foreigner said.
When asking shopping assistants where to find Japanese movies, they introduced another shop in Gubei area and said these shops all belong to a boss.

Here we go again... the big bad laowais fueling the Chinese illegal DVD markets... of course local Chinese would NEVER buy fake DVDs, Bush take that!
Probably the raid was instigated by local officials who worry that our quest for better quality DVDs would create general inflation... |

Exactly! I never see Chinese at my local shop (ha ha). I wouldn't be surprised if it is discovered it is foreigners that are running the stores and not Chinese!
Is this going to added to the new "foreigner illegial activites law??" |

Oh crap. The one place were quality was pretty much guaranteed and they have to hit that one! A bit rediculous really considering pirated DVD's are available on every block in Shanghai. |

I just got a documentary on the silk roads from Ka de on sunday, only to discover it's in Chinese. I've been meaning to go there to exchange it! I can hear my mother now - never put off till tomorrow what can be done today... |

SO, as YariGuy asked - does anyone know if the Maoming Road spot is closed? I've got a friend in town and that was pretty much his favorite option of what to do! |

If Maoming has been temporarily closed also, take your friend out to the place on Hong Mei Road, about a block past the pedestrian street, AlliX... they have an equally good selection and the shop is easier to navigate than either KaDe, plus better prices. Haven't had a problem with quality there and have been making trips to go there rather than Kade since December.
Although further away, it can make for a nice afternoon with all the lunch spots, dvd shopping and a starbucks right next door. |

10,000 yuan is a joke. They can afford to just open back business the following day. |

Yeah, but it's not the fine that's the problem. Until recently (or still?) the maximum fine for drunk driving was 200RMB! |

Thanks so much! I've just moved to Hongqiao so that is even better for me ; )
I'm still unfamiliar with the hood though; do you mind explaining where exactly it is, is it right next to the Starbucks? Thanks!!! |
