Post subject: New Bar: The Oval

A new bar, named The Oval, is scheduled to open this Friday. It is located at 766 Dingxi Lu, near the corner with Yan'an Xi Lu. The manager is Peter Mulcahy, ex O'Malleys. I don't know what opening specials there'll be, but I'll be heading over to check it out. I know Peter wouldn't settle for anything other than a really big party on opening night. The pub's theme is a sports and cricket bar, as indicated by the pub's name. Let's hope this one ain't over and out too soon.

Being a Barfly, I went to check it out, nice place...shame no outside seating but a great place to watch sports indoors.

This place is somewhat on the cavernous side. Needs softer lighting, some light curtains to block the outside lights, and more chicks behind the bar. The steely appearance is very 'mod' but also hard-edged and uncomfortable, unless one likes drinking booze in a country diner. The blue neon light strip above the bar should go, and they should fix the sound system that has no bass whatsoever. For watching sports, all they have at the moment is Philippines and Hong Kong cable, so Barfly must be in to kung fu or overloaded ferry boat races. Of course it's still very early, but The Oval still needs a lot of work.

I'm right behind this place as it's in my neck of the woods. The area needs more bars, and the location of The Oval is ok, IMHO.

I went there the other night to check it out and watch the football mu vs arse and they only had commentary in cantonese!! And given the number of screens it was surprisingly difficult to watch comfortably due to their poor placement. Distinctly devoid of atmosphere i think this place will never make it, I doubt I'll go there again.

Well, the Irish manager has just left due to major disagreements with the main Chinese money-bags investor. I agree, steve99, this bar will probably go belly up faster than any other bar in Shanghai's boozing history.

Shame, that's right up the street from me. Haven't ventured in myself while walking past, but was somewhat concerned with what I could see from outside.
