| Post subject: where to buy a new bike and how much |
I want to get a new bicycle. I want something with quality equivalent to a $400-$500 bike in the US. Should I expect to pay more or less in China for the same quality merchandise? Where should I go to buy? Which brands have good reputation here in Shanghai? |

Crash Course in Product quality in China.
Although majority of items in other countries are "made in China", the quality inspection is more tough, and better quality found in other countries.
In China, "made in China" products are not subject to high quality inspection procedures. IMO for an expensive bike, which you'll probably get jacked within a years time of your stay here, is a Trek Bike, or you can import one if thats an option and count the remaining 354 days until it gets jacked.
Do what everyone else does regardless of short/long term stay here, buy a Giant brand bike for 1-200rmb ($10-40USD) and sleep comfortable at night. |

I consider buying some cheap bike too. But if I pay $40 should I haul spare parts in my back pack? Seems like some breakage is inevitable and I plan to use the bike for commuting to work once a week, about 16 miles (one way). |

Yeah, GIANT are the best, better than Cannondale, Trek, Speciailized, etc etc. For 16 miles you will be wanting a racer? |

I bought my bike at Carrefour for 134 RMB.
It's definitely not what Lance Armstrong rides, but it gets me around just fine and if it ever gets stolen I won't be losing sleep over it. |

I was planning on buying a bike for a long time. A foldable one which I can dismantle and carry up to my office.
Then today whilst I was looking for electronic stuff in Xian Dai Electronic City I came across a stall selling Dahon foldable bikes only.
Yes, I know...bike shop in an Electronic mall???? There is even a stall there selling really nice and good quality umbrellas.
Anyway, I saw a bike I liked in aluminium and bought it. Paid RMB1400 for it.
Address is: 218 XiangYang Road - close to FuXing Road. The bike shop is on 2nd floor. |
