Post subject: Shared folders online

I need to be able to have a shared online folder. That is, a location that myself and others can go to, and open and modify in real time, documents in word and excel etc..... Obviously with passwords and the like.

Any ideas of free downloadable tools that can help?

thanks

I'd like to know this too, actually. Specifically for a Linux server (CentOs if it matters.)

The easiest thing would probably be to use "google documents". Sign up for a google account and just start writing or upload your documents.

www.Hamachi.cc

Private VPN software, and its easy.

Make a share folder on one of the computers. Then install Hamachi on all of them (limit of 16 computers in the free version of hamachi), and you can access the share from any of the computers in the same group in hamachi.

Real easy, and secure too.

Hamachi is available for anything - I have it on my Mac boxes, my unix boxes (yes, unix, not linux), linux boxes, and Windows boxes.

If you have a static ip address available to you, then openvpn is also another option, but hamachi is seriously easy to setup.

That sounds like an option, but then wouldn't the host pc have to be online all the time? It is 3 laptops that we need to be able to access these folders. We have a website, and plenty of server space, is there a way we can place those items on there somehow that is easy for us to access, modify and save. Obviously there will have to be some sort of mechanism to allow only one person at a time to "check out" the document.

Wouldn't the easiest thing to do be to set up an ftp server that only those people have a password/access to?

Not sure if that article has what you need, but it might.

Pffft. Spoilsport. Very Happy

I mean, god, you may as well just have everyone log into the server when they need something, take the file off of there, and then put it back up when they're done.

I just don't know of any software off hand. Maybe J does, but he's not here right now. I'll ask him when he gets back in.

*lol* I admit I am totally naive about security. The other half handles that part of things so I don't have to think about it.
I frequently make headache inducing statements like "Well, why don't you just do this", to which the standard reply is "RTFM and get back to me" Very Happy

@Mat -

Take a look at knowledgetree. Its a document management system with workflow features. The documentation is a bit crap (as with most open source stuff), but its fairly decent.
