Post subject: PSB Crackdown widening?

About a month or so ago, people were talking about the crackdown on foreigners with no motorbike licenses, then comments here & there suggested that they were widening their crackdown to other areas. Unfortunately, I didn't pay too much attention, considering I'm pretty legal here, aside from the (very very occasional, and only somewhat illegal) DVD that I purchase and/or movie I download.

Tonight though, about 5 PSB officers came into the building that I frequent, wanting to see our passports. Of course, we didn't have them. I know very few expats here that carry their passport, and after 6 years in the Land Next To the Rising Sun, I've only been asked one other time, back in Xi'an, when a rival English school sic'ed the PSB on us for having illegal teachers.

We have to report to a PSB office in Minhang on Tuesday afternoon with our passports in hand.
The address is: Huming Road, #4888 if anyone wants to verify that this is indeed a PSB office.

Anyone have any ideas on what's going to happen? We're all legit, so it shouldn't be a problem. I simply "volunteer" at that place, since my visa is with a (VERY LEGIT) IT consultancy company. Hence the link in my sig.

Incidentally, the above Xi'an story eventually led to the OTHER school getting shut down for illegal teachers, since, in fact all 25 of our foreign teachers were indeed legal, and we were a 100% legitimate company. Serves them right for not researching the competition thoroughly. Wink

the place I was at was a predominantly Korean neighborhood. My HOME, however, is currently surrounded by displaced farmers who have no clue of city life, off of the beixinjing station. Only a couple Indian or Pakistani's in the entire complex of 120 buildings. The rest, all local.

well, koreans arent locals. and they dont look the part, either.

it's times like these where being chin-american helps avoid being harassed by local five-o. other times being such proves to be a liability. so it works both ways.

My sources say that the address is legitimate, so unfortunately that makes them real PSB. Guess I gotta go on Tuesday. Way to ruin my day off!

On the other hand, with any luck, they'll catch a few & kick out some of the undesirables. Always good in any situation!

Here's the scoop. They're scouring the new Hongquan Road/Hongxing Road area due to a lot of new foreigners and foreign businesses there. We weren't the first, nor were we the only. And I'll bet we won't be the last.

If you're working in that area, the Minhang District PSB are doing a sweep. So be ready. The area itself is a heavily Korean area and I'm not sure who exactly they're looking for, if it's only the "white boys" or if it's all expats.
감시 자신과 철저히 준비합니다.

Thank my colleagues for the rough korean translation!

probably told them where to go and what to go do with themselves. Shocked

all the foreigners in nanhui got called in a few months ago by the local police. just took a look at our passports and gave us some pamphlets. nothing too big, just a nuisance.

We just had the local police check on our waidi (non-Shanghai residents) workers yesterday, so its probably a routine sweep and not restricted to foreigners.
