That prompted the founder of one of China's biggest cinema chains to say his company would not show her films in his theaters, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter.
"I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the t¡betans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else," Stone said Thursday during a Cannes Film Festival red-carpet interview with Hong Kong's Cable Entertainment News. "And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"
Ng See-Yuen, founder of the UME Cineplex chain and the chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, called Stone's comments "inappropriate," adding that actors should not bring personal politics to comments about a natural disaster that has left five million Chinese homeless, according to the Reporter.
UME has branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou, China's biggest urban movie markets.
During the brief interview, which has also surfaced on YouTube, Stone also said she cried when she recieved a letter from the t¡betan Foundation asking her to help the quake victims.
"They wanted to go and be helpful, and that made me cry," she said. "It was a big lesson to me that sometimes you have to learn to put your head down and be of service even to people who aren't nice to you."
Stone's words created a swell of anger on the Internet, including at least one Chinese Web site devoted solely to disparaging her comments.
An after-hours phone call and email to a representative for Stone were not immediately returned Tuesday night.
"To Sharon Stone's comment, it's unlikely that we will respond," said a woman who answered the phone at the Foreign Ministry in Beijing. She refused to give her name or position.
According to the Web-based database imdb.com, Stone has at least four movies coming up between now and 2010, including "Streets of Blood," "Five Dollars a Day" and "The Year of Getting to Know Us."

There should be a cardinal rule for Hollywood morons like Stone and Richard Gere and rock star tossers like Bono and that is to stay away from making any political statements or actions whatsoever. |

Reminds me of the Tsunami when the common Chinese sentiment which was also voiced quite staunchly on SHexpat was "Fu8ck the indonesians, they had it coming".
Salute the Chinese government for finally stepping up and doing their job for once. Hope the rescue effort goes well and that further pain and loss of life can be minimized.
Too bad Beijing has propped up the Myanmar Junta for so long, perhaps they could have been instrumental in saving another couple hundred thousand lives.....same goes for Darfur.
Salute Sharon stone for using her idiotic voice to clue China in that tragedy occurs worldwide and that not everyone is praying for their safety.
Salute the world that Sharon Stone lives in where she can say anything she wants.
The quake is a definite setback for the t¡betan's cause, but hey, at least it saved the Olympics. |

stone hasnt got any real movie deals for years. barely a face a brandname and a product hence some fame and money.
ziyi... i am not sure about her. feeling that she is good at using every opportunity to promote her own publicity. but i shouldnt comment on her i dont know her at all.

I only hope that I can be rich from my intellection or my intelligence or diligence and I cannot help if some women no matter they are westerners or chinese trying to be famous or gold diggers in world, cause sometimes life forces them to be that and we have to think that if we have no money to maintain selves( depends on the personalities ), Some peole want to be balanced to manage their life in world, some people want to be rich for pleasing themselves, because they think they only have one life to be delighted, some people just do nothing to live, because they think that humans in earth is just the way for death, but also depends on their personalities???

And wasn't the whole point of her comment that despite having an issue with China she SHOULD help the earthquake victims? So she says that, admittedly in a brainless and tasteless way, and must still apologize for 'insulting the Chinese people'.
Like Jack Cafferty had to apologize for 'insulting the Chinese people'. Like an ad for cleaning fluid that quipped about stains created by 'all the teas in China' just had to be withdrawn for 'insulting the Chinese people'. Like Coke pulled an ad featuring laughing Lamas in an amusement park because it was 'insulting the Chinese people'.
Is the Chinese government going to be apologizing to the da1a¡ 1ama? To Chris Patten? |
