Hold it...I went Dino beach yesterday with my husband. Its a very nice place with lots a fun ride, but the whole place is still a dead town. If you want a private club feeling, you can go now, your kids will end up as the only person in the kids zone. Otherwise, you may want to postphone for a few more weeks.
By the way, the ticket is really expensive(ok, in my opinion). Its 200RMB per person, and 100 RMB for kids above 80cm. |

It sounds wonderful that you didn't have to queue up with thousands of locals who try to squeez in front of you all the time! |

Yeah - go now before it gets crowded - especially with young kids. If you go in August it's packed which can be a little scary with little ones and water! |

Yeah, we went last year and the year before that and in the beginning of the summer it was not crowded and it was really nice. July or August -- too crowded, long lines...planning to go again as soon as it gets wet (today would have been good i guess) |

Just checked their website. I think the entrance fees are fine if they are all inclusive. Do you need to pay for the "body check"? What about the swimming rings etc? Is the food inside of reasonable quality and reasonably priced? Thanks |

I do not remember the prices, but you DO have to pay for the swimming rings (you put down a deposit that you get back and you pay something too) and the food is not only expensive, but pretty bad too.
But, in spite of these little things, it is a GREAT place to go when not crowded. |

http://www.dinobeach.com.cn/ - no English
Every time I go I don't take enough money - I always forget about the deposit on the tubes. I don't think you are required to do the body check.
I haven't been in a few years but the prices used to be different each day with girls free on some days and guys on others and a family day. I don't read Chinese but I didn't see anything that looked like a daily pricing guide on the site - maybe they don't do that anymore? |

Dino Beach is a good place for kids but not really interesting for toddlers. The entrance ticket is expensive and you are NOT allowed to bring your own food or drinks. Therefore you need prepare enough cash.
Yesterday some friends took us to a a small beach resort about 1 hour drive from downtown Shanghai. Nice place for kids as there is a big sandy beach, a slide and you can also rent kayaks. Entrance was 80 rmb. We were almost the only ones there so it was nice. Kids loved it. I will try to get the exact name of the place and directions. |

Its good when you no need to queue for anything, but we actually start to talk about Michael Jackson and his "castle". We start to understand why he always need to invite kids to his "castle" and ended up getting sued by people, if you know what I mean.
As for the charges, you need to pay for the ring. Its 120RMB (60RMB deposit) for a single float and 200RMB (can't remember how much is the deposit) for the double float.
As for food, you are not supposed to bring food in. They serve fast food. I don't remember being expensive, but its not nice.
There is a body check counter, but there is no need to do any body check. And you are not allow to bring in glass item, including perfume bottle. They found mine and I have to deposit in the entrance and collect it when I came out. |

Here is a link to the prices in english. They still do have some sort of special days/hours but not as cool as last year. I hope that now that it's more expensive, it will also be less crowded...planning to go as soon as the weather gets better...was hoping to do it this week but it doesn't look like we'll be able to...

Another place good for kids is Gongqing Forest park. You can picnic there and even BBQ. There are plenty of activities for kids to do. You can also rent rooms to stay overnight.
If you look on a map from the Bund you follow the Huangpu river all the way North until you get to yangpu district. Then you' ll see the park as it's located right by the river. Using the Zhongshan North road it's quite easy to get there.

This is a great thread, definitely for someone like me who's planning to stay put in Shanghai with my family this fummer. I'm planning to check out Gongqing Forest this weekend - hope it won't be too crowded, given that the summer vacation for the local schools start tomorrow, I understand.
I would like to contribute to this list another location - The Shanghai Flower Port located in Nanhui. Not absolutely fantastic, but it's quite a pretty, quiet garden with lots of flowers to see (unfortunately no more tulips when we were there 2 weeks ago), no crowd at all, at least not when we were there.
I'll be looking out for more suggestions in this thread. |

The picture in Gongqing Forest park looks really cool.
Is it really as serene as it potray in the website? One thing I find typical in Shanghai garden is that its always full of people and activity. Not those where you want to put a mat, lie down there and read a book.
The only one is Xi Jiao Guest State House Garden which is really quiet and serene. They are open to public. You have to walk deep in and there is a beautiful lake. But there are no activity, not even stalls that sell food. So you have to bring everything yourself. |

on sunny days Gongqing forest park does get crowded but the place is quite big and you look carefully you'll be able to find a nice and quiet spot on the grass.
Though tempting, I would not recommend the BBQ place. It's a designated spot within the park and it's full of people who have absolutely no idea on how to do it (though they sell everything you need even the frozen meat). Crowded, full of smoke and very noisy. Better bring your own picnic stuff.
I found the name of the beach I went to. It's called The Jingsha Blue Sea Resort in Shanghai's Fengxian District and it is the largest man-made beach in China.
It's said that the sand was imported from Hainan island.

The beach opened in 2006 so most of the feedbacks you may found will date from back then. It has been discussed before on Shanghai expat.

The water quality was ok. Kids loved it. Entrance ticket is now 80 rmb and parking fee is 10 rmb. Using the highway you get there quite easily in about 1 hour drive from the Shanghai stadium. As you get closer you see farmers selling fruits on the side.
I expect it to be really crowded in July and August though we were lucky enough to enjoy it almost empty. I did not checked the facilities.
I would say it's a decent spot not too far from the city, great for families and I would certainly go back there.
But don't expect it to look like Hainan or Thailand ! |

On a map Fengxian is located South-West of Shanghai city, south of Minhang district. |

Fengxian is a little ways out their but its still worth the 1.5 hour car ride. Nice place to take the family kite flying and ofter there are huge sand castles / buildings being built by artists in the sand. |
