Post subject: glasses

Does anybody know the best place to get glasses made (I already have my prescription), preferably good quality designer glasses (not sunglasses or anything) at a reasonable price??
thanks

the cheapest place, with the biggest variety of frames as well, is the glasses market near the Shanghai Railway Station. Take the subway there, and go out exit 3. There was a lot of construction last time, but I think you go to the right as you come out, and then down some stairs. There should be some signs around. Be prepared to bargain. They wanted 500 RMB for my last pair (frames and lenses included), but I got them down to 100RMB. Beware, there are different quality lenses as well, I got the 2nd highest quality.

Qingyun Lu is all glasses shops and some of the places are very high quality. Glasses ready in 1/2 hour. Not as cheap as the Railway Station market, though. If you're just concerned about quality, not price, your best bet is probably Lenscrafter - plenty of designer frames and most of the lenses are from Italy.

Lenscrafters quoted me rmb 3900 just for the blended trifocal lenses (europe import) in Shanghai so I got mine filled at Lenscrafters for the same lenses in US for $240 with discount coupon. If you are going to use Lenscrafters, you may want to have your prescription filled in the US and then have the glasses shipped. It does become a hassle, however, if they goof when filling you prescription.

Lenscrafter is that expensive (3900 for test and frames I assume)?! Need a new pair (as well as an eye test) and didnt expect to pay that much.

It's much cheaper in the UK for glasses! Specsavers etc...

Sberg where is Qingyun lu? Will I need to be able to speak Chinese? Any idea what time these places would be open until in the evening?

Going to HK soon, anyone know if you can get cheap but quality glasses and tests there?

Thanks

I went to Jiuzhou, on the 4th floor of the glasses building over the SH bus terminal, near SH railway stn, last weekend. It was Ok. Need to bargain though.
