| Post subject: Merits of Teaching Qualifications |
Hi,
Can anyone give me some advice regarding the merits of various teaching qualifications in Shanghai?
When I move to Shanghai I will have a Bachelor of Arts in History. If I wanted to obtain a position as a tutor or teacher in English, would it be advantageous to gain the TESOL qualification?
Lastly, if I became a certified teacher in my own country (New Zealand) would this be beneficial? If so, should I concentrate on gaining a secondary level (high school; ages 13-18 )or primary (junior school, ages 5-12) certificate?
Many thanks,
Jaz |

Having a degree is good. Having a recognized TESL certificate is very good. There are many of the better ( higher paying) English schools that require it, so you would definitely open some door by having it. You should do some research as to what certificates are broadly recognized as there are company just providing their own courses and certificates and they may or may not be considered valid in the marketplace for English teachers. |
