Post subject: calling other ladies of leisure . . .

I've been in Shanghai for almost a month now and would like to meet some people who are in a similar position as me. I'm a 26 year old female from Australia and here for the next 2-3 months while my husband works. I'm looking for other ladies who are looking for a shopping/coffee/lunch/exploring etc buddy during the weekdays, during working hours, while their husband/boyfriend is at work. Weekends and evenings I like to keep so I can hang out with my husband.

Welcome to Shanghai Claire! A warm and hearty welcome! Have you considered spending some time getting to know the local wildlife? Birdwatching perhaps? It can be quite enjoyable. Shanghai is famous for it's population of ducks, and there are even groups of ladies in a situation similar to yours who go so far as to "sponsor" them.

Well - I was thinking of meeting people one-on-one but it seems like the group get together is the way to go since there seems to be a few 26ish year old female expat wives/gf - any nationality, not just aussies, are welcome. Anyway, I'm quite central near Time Square and Xintiandi, and Starbucks, dare I say it, is a familiar and comfortable place to meet people for the first time.
So I'm going to call it:
Friday 6th Feb, 11am, Starbucks, Xintiandi
I will repeat the activity on Monday 9th Feb for those who can't make Friday or send me a private message and we can meet up one on one if you prefer.
I'm the short blonde one with messy hair - I'll wear a red top for easy identification.
So come along if you want to make a friend, or maybe several friends if we are lucky!

. besides, i haven't met many aussies yet, have been here a few months already. nationality is irrelevant it's just a coincidink that this forum has shown a few, incl some from the same state (go SA)!

G'day Claire and Mal. Good on you for taking the initiative to get fellow ladies together to explore all the wonderful things that are available to us all! Don't think I know all of em but will give you a few that may of help. There's plenty of groups to get involved with short term being Aussie or otherwise.

You could start with Friday night drinks from 6-10pm at Kakadu Restaurant that are held by Austcham. http://www.austchamshanghai.com. The address is 8 Jianguo Zhong Lu, (near Chongqing Lu). Tel: 5468-0118. 30rmb entry to non Austcham members and discounted drinks.

There's also the Australian Women's Social Group. You can find out about them at http://www.awsg.org/. They have a newcomer's coffee morning on the First Friday of each month at Starbucks Xintian di at 10.00am so it's close to where you are.

Another great group is the good ole SEA - Shanghai Expatriate Association. http://www.seashanghai.org. Lots of ladies to meet from all nationalities. Next get together is Monday, February 9 at 10 a.m at the J.C. Mandarin Hotel, 1225 Nanjing Xi Lu. RMB 50 members, RMB 100 non-members.

If you are interested in the historical side of Shanghai you could do walks through the lanes and historic homes with the Australian architect Anne Warr. http://www.walkshanghai.com.

The Shanghai Expat forum has oodles of information from so many very well informed and knowlegable folk in Shanghai so I urge you to use the search section on the top left hand area and hunt away!!

I wish I were a "lady of leisure" but I have to run a business. Maybe in my next life. wink2
