Post subject: Martial Art training in Shanghai?

Hello,
I am about to make the giant leap from Canada to Shanghai and have a love of martial arts. I am sure there is an overwhleming number of places to train but is anyone able to recommend some gyms? I am particularly interested in SanShou (aka Sanda). I have done my research and it is the fighting style that best suits me. Anyone know where I should start looking?

Actually you'll be underwhelmed. Not very popular here.
You can do the stay at a monastery thing if you are into authenticity*.
*This includes being woken up at 5am to start practice etc.

Myself, I prefer less authentic, and more sleep. I can get details on that if interested, but its more wushu than anything else.

NB you also could have just said kickboxing, would have been easier..

Suggest start here - http://www.longwukungfu.com/ for something foreigner friendly.

A 2 second search for kickboxing, shanghai (散打 上海) gives a handful of other places

Good luck!

I know a bloke in Shanghai that did the Shaolin Temple training and now he's hard as ****. I know another bloke in Hong Kong who studied Wing Chun there and he's also the same. In Shanghai though, as Comp Sol said, very little I think....

You might want to try out www.shatkd.com. I've never been there but a friend told me they also do Sanda. Would be interesting to know your experiences / opinion. There is another place where they do Sanda at Yushan Stadium in Pudong near to my appartment. I had a look one time and wasn't that impressed (one guy standing in front with a whistle and a bunch of Chinese doing techniques as it looked without really understanding why and what they do). Anyway, hope the other place is better. On a side note, situation in Shanghai isn't really great but there are now several Chinese and expats offering Martial Arts classes; e.g. what I do www.shanghaijujutsu.com.

Many fake masters here who likes people who can pay but has no or little skills. So beware. The real ones are not in the well known places anymore. I came excited to learn from the best but now i practice for health reasons only.
