BEIJING - CHINA has killed more than 400 cows after foot and mouth disease (FMD) was found among cattle on the outskirts of Shanghai, state media said.
Forty-one cows developed symptoms of the disease on Feb 3, which was confirmed as foot and mouth on Wednesday, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Xinhua said late on Wednesday that 440 cows were culled at a farm in the Fengxian district of Shanghai.
No outbreak of the disease has been discovered outside the farm, Xinhua said.
China suffers frequent outbreaks of foot and mouth, which is only sometimes fatal in cattle, pigs, and can also infect deer, goats, sheep, and other animals. The last known outbreak was in 2007.
Foot and mouth does not sicken humans but is highly contagious among other mammals. It can be carried by wind and on the vehicles and clothes of people who come into contact with infected animals. -- AP |
