| Post subject: how much is an apartment |
I'm considering taking a job in Shang Hai. I was told that I could get a decent place for about 1500 -2000 chinese dollars a month. Is this true? |

Depends on where - what part of town, how big, how new, and how well you can negotiate in chinese. In general, probably not for a decent place. For a foreigner who wants a small 80sq meter apt near downtown, you are probably looking at 3-4000 RMB ( chinese dollars ) . |

2000 Chinese dollars(called RMB here) will never get you a decent place, even at area far from downtown. |

No. You are really quoting a shared apartment price. (1500-2000).
If you want to stay independant, and NOT live in a cave, you will need to allow 3000 +
(The currency is variously know as Renmimby RMB for short, Yuan, and Kwai mainly in Beijing, and a few other things.) Not dollars though. |

"Chinese dollars" is not that inaccurate if you think about it. |

I vote for 4000rmb minimum. If you are in a $1000 USD apartment in a major city in the US then it would be 8000 to 12000rmb here. If you are in something nicer than that, then prices rise quickly. |

Well, we have helped people find places for people on their own, one bedroom, and "decent" for 3000, but hard to find, and prob. not downtown.

These writers clearly have no idea how to find a real apartment. I live in an absolutely beautiful hard wood floors apartment in Xujiahui. 77 square meters in a foreign owned building. I have an amazing view of Xujiahui and the church and live on the top floor, 25th floor. I am only paying 2800 per month and includes all the furniture and a nice sized flat screen TV. These people are just using agents that are trying to rip off foreigners. If you have Chinese friends they can always get you the local price. Don't pay the "foreign rate". |

Ha Ha . "View of the church" I love that. Just what we want.
2,800 is pretty B close to the 3000 I suggested, and of course ALL quoted apartments will have ALL furniture, unless otherwise stated. And yes, most will have flat screen TV and many other things which YOU may not have.
Yes, I have worked in real estate, and now help expats find great places at local prices. I just wish someone would pay me for this free service.
SIGH! |

@rick_SH: Yeah noticed you are on floor 25, the TOP floor.
Do you realize the top floor is often cheaper? Most roofs in Shanghai are flat, and the top floor usually leaks serious amounts of water.
Add to this the fact that the top floor is like an oven in the summer, and a fridge in the winter.
Sure you have AC, (I presume), but do you want to pay 2 x the power bill?
Could be you are paying too much for your rental with the amazing views. |

I love this 'Chinese Dollars' thing. Really made me smile. I'm more used to 'British Dollars' but sometimes also use 'European Dollars' as well. |

Rick's flat screen may also be capable of receiving ICS which must reduce the rental price somewhat... |

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. I pay 2000 RMB for a sunny, clean, high-ceilinged one bedroom apartment in the Changning district, a stone's throw from what will eventually be a stop on the new number 10 line. |

Perhaps you could pay a coolie some of your Chinese dollars so that he may run you from villa to villa in his rickshaw. You could then drink tea and smoke cigars with the wealthy expat residents in these areas, perhaps earning your keep by safeguarding the salon from nosy gardener servants. I am sure you will be compensated fairly with more Chinese dollars. |

Untrue. Flats are available as of today Sep 26 2009 for as less as RMB 1500 a month in suburbs.
Of course, I like the "Chinese dollar" expression. Think its natural for an expat |

Root, I guess you meant 'Baoshan' instead of 'Baoan'
Baoan is a district in Shenzhen instead of Shanghai. |
