| Post subject: Study in Fudan. Where to live? |
Hi,
I will be studying in Fudan University from next September and I would like to know if living in Jing an district is convenient and how long takes to reach the University (by underground).
Thanks |

At the current time the Metro passes nowhere (my view) near Fudan. I am doing my second couple of months stint at Crowne Plaza Fudan for work , it is located at one end of campus and in some ways, this is the ass end of creation.
Nearest Metro Stop right now is Daibashu. When the new line (11? sorry) opens next year it will still be a 10-15 walk at least to other end of campus. Is it just me or do the do some of the metro line connections here have some of the most godawful hikes to get between lines?
Other than that I actually like the area. I don't go into the Bund or downtown that often so mostly doesn't bother me. Most annoying thing is cabs downtown area have problems finding hotel but it is also on a one way and Handan road has a bypass tunnel that half of them drive into. I'd kill for a decent slice of pizza near here if someone knows one.

FYI lifted this from a post when i was looking for a Pizza place in Fudan- from another person who was a student at fudan U
"This post will be a little late, but perhaps for someone thinking about coming to Fudan next semester:
There are busses you know!
I speak barely ANY chinese yet Ive managed to figure out parts of the bussystem and its really efficient actually (although a bit crowded).
I live in town and commute to Fudan everyday, it takes time, but its easy, so i dont really mind. I would recommend living in north of Jingan district (nearby Changshou lu) as the 966 bus goes directly from Fudan main gate to Jing an. I know there are busses going directly from ppl square to fudan as well.
They run often and are very cheap (3 RMB from Jing an to Fudan), so skip the taxis!" |

Thanks JR, I guess I should look for an apartment in the ass end of creation rather than in downtown. |

I have just read your last message, JR. The problem I see about the bus is I have to be in Fudan around 8am, and I'm worried I will be stick in a traffic jam with the bus everyday... |

Live near the university. It's much easier to take a 100 kuai taxi at 3am on the nights you go out, then commute every day. When I was at Fudan, the international dorm was unreasonably expensive. If you can find a chinese speaker to help you, then rent a room in a hotel for a couple of days, and get out and see a handful of apartments. Also, plan on getting a bike. It takes about 20 minutes to talk from one end of campus to the other, you'll want a bike out there, even if you uses buses/metros for long distances. Line 4 was the only metro when I was a student, I'd ride my bike to the station, then take the metro into the more vibrant parts of the city. |

What is the neighborhood like between Crowne Plaza end of Fudan and Daibashu station, seems like then he would have access to the metro somewhat and be a reasonable distance to the campus. I would think you would have to have a bike to get around campus that big. |

I've walked to the Dabaishu a couple of times now from Fudan and I think they finished whatever they were doing. Maybe they were building all the elevated roads I see over there now. |
