| Post subject: Latest on Indian Visas |
Hey,
Anyone picked up an Indian visa @ their Shanghai consulate recently? Their website doesn't appear to clear regarding if a foreigner (Canadian, in my case) requires a Chinese work visa to apply for a Indian tourist visa. I'm on a Chinese tourist visa.
Regards, |

I applied for one last month and they did ask for a photocopy of my residence permit sticker. It's possible that a legal China visa would also suffice but you would need to check with the consulate. |

Thanks for the response
My bad - I'm actually on an F-visa (business. apparently). Not sure if that changes anything.
My understanding is that an F-visa does not contain an residence permit?
I've been getting conflicting views regarding Indian visas in China. From some, it appears that it is similar to the Russians...ie. you won't get one unless you are legally working in China with the corresponding Z-visa and residence permit. Others have said that no, you can get on at the consulates in China without the residence permit.
The Indian consulate website is ambiguous and unclear (surprise, surprise) and they don't return emails/calls...another big surprise there. |

I find this a bit hard to believe. Does this mean you are forced you to go back to your home country to apply for a tourist visa? Does this mean that we can't hop from one country to another if on a trek around the world? Bloody hell. The world's gone mad......ah tell ye.....we're all doooooooooomed. |

From Indian Embassy Website:
For all categories of visas, applicants must be in possession of the Foreigner Resident Permit (Green Booklet issued by the Public Security Bureau) or Alien Employment Permit (issued by the Labor Department). The passport must have a validity of at least six months. The application form must be duly completed and signed by the applicant himself/herself. For business visas, visitors should submit a letter of invitation from the concerned Indian Company.
Short term visitors to China, or those not in possession or Resident Permit Cards, may also apply for visas to India if they have not, for any reason, been able to do so at an Indian Mission in the place of their normal residence. They need to pay an additional Yuan 100.00 towards telex/fax charges.
Issue of such visas will take a minimum of 4 to 5 working days.
Non-Chinese nationals please check with us through e-mail/phone regarding change of visa fees.
Note:
All foreigners including foreigners of Indian origin visiting India on long-term (more than 180 days) visas will be required to register themselves with the concerned Foreigner’s Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of his/her arrival.

Thanks for the response!
I read that stuff too, however the conflict comes here....
The Indians contract out visa duties to a company called VTS Global which states on their website that...
1. Passport of all applicants should be valid for six months
2. All applications must be completed and signed by the applicants themselves. No incomplete application will be accepted. Applications can be submitted in person or sent through representatives.
3. Chinese nationals are required to submit a copy of their ID card and foreign nationals are required to submit a copy of their Permanent Residence Permit while applying for a visa. All the photos should be similar in size and design.
http://www.indianconsulate.org.cn/
To their credit they emailed me back immediately (benefit of farmed out visa service?) with cryptic answer asking if I had a residence permit written in a way that completely ignored my question. I had clearly and simply stated in one sentence that I was on a F-Visa and was looking for options for those without a residence permit. Bizarre...I thought the question was worded properly...
Anyways, the annoyance goes on...deja vu from when I went for my Russian one last year.
@Misteral. This kind of thing is quite common for countries without strong tourism policies. They make it very difficult to obtain tourist visas outside ones home country if the applicant doesn't have all of the proper papers for the country they are presently in. In my case, I don't have a residence permit. If you have that document, then it shouldn't be a problem. |

Why don't you just call them and ask? |

Also, to note that, foreign nationals are required to submit a copy of their Permanent Residence Permit,
How many here holds the Permanent Residence Permit? It's totally wrong. You can rely on the content written on Indian Consulate's website and confirm with VFS. |
