| Post subject: vegan cakes, blender and non-chinese spices |
Hi,
1. anyone know if it possible to get vegan cakes in town? (no dairy, no eggs)? 2. I'm also looking to buy a blender downtown - a simple and cheao one. Couldn't find it.
3. last thing - I'm looking for spices such as cumin and paprika - again, couldn't find.
Any help would highly appreciate! |

This is going to be difficult It's already next to impossible to convince Chinese that ham or chicken is meat
I just wanted to suggest the red bean sandwich from Ichido but the bread is made from eggs I suppose.
You could ask TokyoCat - read that she/he is vegan

If you want to eat something sweet you could try the sweet rice stuff from Carrefour. I don't think that there are eggs inside. It's called 刀米 or 切片米 or something like that. Sometimes it's with dried fruit.
At Zhongshan Park Carrefour you can find it next to the fresh noodles, dumplings, baozi ...
I had a look here, but couldn't find anything about being vegan in Shanghai

Cumin is called,
孜然芹 zī rán qín
安息茴香ān xī huí xiāng
阿拉伯茴香ā lā bó huí xiāng
小茴香 xiǎo huí xiāng
I think you can find it in every Chinese supermarket.
Or at least in the Indian shops stated here?

Are you looking for sweet paprika or hot paprika? I always make my own hot paprika. I buy the dried chilli peppers and grind them.(I use our coffee grinder) |

Every Xingjiang meat kabob vendor on the street has cumin and hot red pepper... so it should be all over. I brought a pound of cumin from the US.
Carrefour has a lot of cheap blenders with juice attachments and grinder attachments. We make fresh soy milk and grind coffee with the we bought. Seems to me it wasn't much more than 120.
In terms of eating vegan, 90% of the time you are probably going to want to do your own cooking. Even tofu dishes here often have pork. In terms of cakes.. every cake I have had here has eggs at least in the cake part and is filled with synthetic whip cream. One or two of the good bakeries could probably do something to order for you.. House of Flour ( Pudong ) or Bastiann ( Hong Mei Rd out west past Gubei ) . |

Vegan seems pretty hopeless from what I've seen. Vegetarian is probably not too difficult, but even places designated as vegetarian often serve meat so you have to wonder if they wash out the oil from the pan after they've cooked some beef before they throw in your bellpepper and eggplant surprise. =P
If you go to Mealbay http://www.mealbay.com.cn/index.php, there's a place called "Godly" that claims to be vegetarian. I can't vouch for it though, never tried. |

You should check out http://www.happycow.net/ for veggie restaurants. I haven't seen meat at any of the ones I've been to! My favorite is Vegetarian Lifestyle, but the aforementioned Godly is good, too. Both have attached shops that sell some vegan sweets and cookies.
I've been here since September and am still happily vegan. I do have to make my own cakes, but it's certainly not hopeless! As for the blender, I ended up with one from Carrefour and my cumin is from Pines. |

Yesterday we had lunch at the New Age Veggie in Superbrand Mall - there was a large sign saying that they have cake without eggs |

Give the folks at Annamaya a call and ask if their cakes are vegan. It's a vegetarian restaurant on Taojiang Lu (near Hengshan Lu). I love their desserts (and just about everything else on the menu) - tastes great without being heavy and 'gluggy' but I don't know if they're vegan.

Annamaya is definitely worth a try. Very cosy place with extremely friendly staff. Also a nice change from the usual veggie mock meat dishes. |
