Post subject: Custom building a PC

Hello,

I want to buy a new power supply and graphics card for my PC, so where would be a good place in Shanghai to buy the best quality components for custom-built PCs?

Thanks,
Mark

newegg and 360buy are your best option for online as these are single retailers/shops. Taobao is like ebay with hundred of retailers and shops. If you need a good shop you want to visit yourself I can give you direction, PM me.

If you get off at Xu Jai Hui on Line one of the Metro there is a big cyber mart there. There are 14 Exits to the metro station and I think ... its exit 13.
If you go outside you want the building that has two lifts on the outside and a big Advert for the new snazzy Dell on the front. They have a DIY computer area. There are 5 floors in total and they sell all the bits from power supplies to motherboards and memory. I suggest printing off 360buy e.t.c to get a price idea then try and haggle as the listed costs are higher.

No way is XuJiaHui the place to get computer products, not if you're concerned about price. The whole point of building your own PC is that you can save money and build something more powerful than the pre-made stuff. XuJiaHui has the latest stuff, but it's way more expensive than places like NewEgg. There's a computer market in Baoshan that is much better suited for this stuff.

I vote for Newegg. I used it in the usa and in China they deliver for free or a small fee.

Newegg was my favorite online store in the States as well. I've been navigating their site via nerdanese so far, but haven't tried to buy anything... just yet...
Let me know if you use them and how it goes if you do.

Recently went to Xu Jai Hui for a RAM upgrade. Guy who sold me the RAM at a good price and offered to put it in my laptop - worked for me so I could see it works on the spot.

First, they tried to put in the wrong RAM (after I told them exactly the right part I was after) they then started to use a screwdriver to get my existing RAM out...

I politely took the screwdriver off them and put it in myself.

The point of my random story (****, I hope you're still reading) is that if you don't know what you're after or what you want you may want to try someone like Best Buy's Geek Squad or someone on this forum (like compsolutions) who knows what they are doing.

But yes, Newegg is pretty good.

They took a screwdriver to your ram? WTF... Why are they selling computer components when they have NFI what they are doing?

The guy didn't want to break his really long fingernails? I don't know - usually the shops at Xu Jai Hui are pretty good and know their stuff. Maybe just one n00b.

Just find everything you want on taobao - write down the types and the lowest prices you can find in Shanghai then go to xujiahui and tell them you want to buy alot pick a few items you won't budge on price and a few they can earn 50 to 100 rmb on

I just bought a complete i7 system this afternoon in Xujiahui - after seeing these comments i checked newegg and some thing were actually more expensive there - plus you get to go back to the shop where you bought if any problems and you get to take it with you instantly rather than having to hear out of stock

To each their own i can bargain pretty well and like to have the things in my hand before i say yes

All my (and my family's) PC's in the past few years were custom built. The whole shebang bought in the XuJiaHui mall. Best value for money, and service (!) I have ever seen.

Hi Celso,

Any chance you could list the components and the prices/total price that you paid?

I'm embarking on building an i7 system myself soon and project it to cost about 11000rmb on 360buy.com or newegg.

Say, is 360buy.com reliable? They even have "warranty and installation" schemes for sale... like 588rmb for a year's package. Not a big deal since I can DIY but would be nice if I'm away and it somehow breaks down for some reason.

Still a few bits to add but this is mostly it below:
戴尔(DELL)G2410 24英寸LED宽屏液晶显示器
¥1,758.00
英特尔 45纳米 酷睿i7 四核处理器 i7-920盒装CPU(LGA1366/2.66GHz/8M三级缓存/1366MHz)D0 步进 ¥2,099.00
华硕(ASUS)P6T 主板(Intel X58/LGA 1366) ¥2,199.00

I would use the Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB instead of the 1TB Red series. The red series are the enterprise edition that are normally used in server application and RAID configuration. Or if you can get them here in Shanghai the newer WD Black 500GB single platter which will be perfect for the OS drive.

Thanks Mr_Happy.

Wrong drive, I guess, since I don't think I'm bothering to do RAID. I've been a Seagate user for years but have been hearing reports that reliability has been going down. Not too sure but thought of switching to be on the safe side! Thanks for the tip!

Great idea to have an OS drive and a game/app/swap drive!

I have been using the WD Black 320/640GB Drives for my OS and the Black 1TBs for data for the last two years. They are rock solid in construction and come with a 5 year warrenty. The WD Blacks are as fast as you are going to need unless you go for the 300GB Velociraptor but even then the speed difference is not going to be noticable to you, a few seconds to load Windows maybe!

Just waiting for the 2TBs to become available at a good price here in Shanghai!!!

Doesn't differ too much

i7 920 d0 - 1980 rmb
Seagate 7200.12 1TB - 630 rmb (new tech 500Gb platters i would take that over the WD black)
Saphire HD4870 1G - 1200 rmb
P6T - 2200 rmb
Noctua NH C12P CPU cooler 550rmb (height issues in my case)
Corsair PSU 850W - 950 rmb
Intel X25-M 80G SSD - 1700 (2nd hand though HP OEM device) considering a 2nd for RAID0
OCZ DDR3 2x3GB 1600 (OCZ3X1600LV6GK) 930 rmb

Not sure what antec a300 is?

I had my case DVD-RW and LCD already - so about the same - all manufacturers offer about a 3 year warranty - OCZ lifelong on the mem sticks

Think the prices are not to far apart from you just check taobao for the absolute lowest prices write them down and start bargaining with that - they have internet in most shops so if they disagree just show them the taobao page that's what i did and build it yourself **** their warranty - it all goes back to the manufacturers anyway - if you build it and there is an issue you know how to fix it

GTX275 = 1660 rmb

http://item.taobao.com/auction/item_detail-0db2-114de5c581fd62fe50251f 1641b1ab22.jhtml?cm_cat=110206

corsair mem = 850

http://item.taobao.com/auction/item_detail-0db2-c47cb49d0fe1211f1b1f4a 4521ee38d7.jhtml?cm_cat=0

to name a few but no huge difference

BTW i went for the huge overspec-ed PSU but to my welcome surprise i could not be more quiet it can handle huge loads so even when OC-ing its still quiet and doesn't break a sweat you might wanna consider going bigger - ur VGA card is gonna be power hungry - i think

Celso and Mr. Happy, thanks for the info.

I will probably stick with 360buy.com if they're "reliable" here.
Bargaining in the pc mall will give me the headache since there are so many items.
