The Curriculum

Our programme is based on the English National Curriculum which has been adapted to meet the needs of our international community.

THE EARLY YEARS - Pupils aged 2 to 4 years

The English National Curriculum defines Early Learning goals in six defined areas of learning At the British International School, our pupils explore these six areas every day through structured activities and purposeful play.

Classes are accommodated in custom-built, light, spacious rooms providing our pupils with a warm, professional and caring environment.

The Early Years Curriculum serves as a thorough preparation for progression into the Reception Class.

RECEPTION - Pupils aged 4 and 5 years

In September following their fourth birthday, children normally move into the Reception Class.

Here, they take their first steps in learning to read and in communicating their thoughts through writing.

THE PRIMARY SCHOOL - Pupils aged 5 - 11 years

Key Stages 1 & 2

The school is proud children achieve high academic standards whilst developing their own independence of mind. We think it is essential that children learn to monitor and to evaluate their own achievements. Children receive considerable individual attention from teachers with the breadth of vision to develop the enquiring mind by encouraging children to ask 'why?' and 'how?'

There are specialist teachers in Music, Art, French, Information Technology, Physical Education, and English as an Additional Language.

THE SECONDARY SCHOOL - Pupils aged 11 - 18 years

A balance between breadth and depth of study encourages pupils to reach their full potential.

Key Stage 3
Pupils aged 11 to 14 years

Our curriculum reflects the best practice of the National Curriculum, which is adapted and enriched in keeping with our international environment. Pupils at this stage benefit from specialist teachers and facilities. Within Key Stage 3, the aim of all staff is to encourage in students a recognition that learning is enjoyable, that knowledge can be acquired and that knowing how to access information is the basis upon which a successful future can be built.

Key Stage 4
Pupils aged 14 to 16 years

Year 10 & 11 are the two years leading up to the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education). These examinations are specifically designed to test a wide range of skills, besides those normally associated with written examinations, such as field work in Geography, practical work in Science, oral communication in languages, all of which increase the importance of a serious approach over the full two years of the course. We work hard to ensure that our pupils are successful in both coursework and examinations.

Post 16
Pupils aged 16 to 18 years

At the Pudong and Puxi campuses of the British International School pupils are prepared for universities worldwide through the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Others

Learning continues outside the classroom

We offer our pupils the chance to enhance their education through a wide range of extra-curricular activities organized by parents and teachers. These activities mostly take place after school and can be as diverse as karate, ballet, writing club, environment club, music, drama and sports clubs including football, basketball, netball and volleyball.

Partnership with Parents

We welcome our parents as partners in their children's education and acknowledge the important role they play in the life of the school. We also believe it is essential to maintain regular contact with parents about their child's progress. We have an "Open Door "policy and parents are encouraged to come to meet teachers by appointment wherever this is needed.

Developing English Skills

Some of our students will join us with little or no English. These children receive support from our specialist EAL teachers. Small group tuition provides a perfect environment to enable the pupil's full integration into the appropriate class. These EAL lessons take place during the school day where students will attend from 3 to 5 lessons per week. Most of the day is however spent with the peer group where language is acquired through interaction and immersion.
