Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones was founded in 2006 with a mission to introduce expat and local volunteers to teach English at Shanghai's schools for migrant children, with a view to improving their oral English, building their confidence and helping them pass their middle and high school entrance exams.
Our network consists of more than 250 volunteers teaching in 18 schools and community centres in various suburbs of Shanghai. The students range from 1st grade primary to 3rd grade junior middle school. Most volunteers teach the same class one morning or afternoon per week, any day from Monday to Sunday. We begin evening oral English classes for local English teachers in Sept 2009.
We provide professional teacher training and support to the volunteers. Volunteers who are not confident to teach English alone can act as co-teachers. The only requirements are a good level of English, high level of enthusiasm and patience, and an interest in teaching English to new learners.
This programme offers a rewarding and meaningful way to get to know another side of Shanghai's society and to contribute to the education of under-privileged children.
