  • Part one in a series about where to find a good read in Shanghai Part II, Used Bookstores and Online Shopping
    Part III, Libraries in Shanghai

I must admit, I don’t read nearly as much as I should. My bookshelf sits there brimming with half-read titles still crisp from the press, some with the saran wrap still intact. But come this winter, instead of re-watching the same episode of Battlestar Gallactica for the 12th time, I’m going to get in touch with my inner bookworm and attack that imposing stack of books. But why do I have so many books I have never read? Where do they all come from?

Houses of Worship that are “appropriate for the masses”

  • Shanghainese Jeff Lu gives us the local scoop on this kitschy recreation.

  • The Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed railway made its first journey in July 2010 as another step to rapidly connect the two key cities. Running at a top speed of 350 km/hr and taking only 73 minutes non-stop (as opposed to over two hours on the train with intermediate stops and over four hours on the slow train), the line is part of a bigger effort in which the Chinese government is using ¥6 trillion to construct 50,000 km of high-speed rail to mobilize its giant population and gain revenues. The whole project is set to be finished by the year of 2020 and will include four East-West and four North-South lines.

  • You can get good help these days.

Newbies, you will quickly realize that most anyone with a little expendable income indulges in the accessibility of maid services in China. It’s really nice not having to do your dishes or coming home from a hard day at work to a clean apartment. Depending on responsibilities, a maid or AYI (loosely translated as “auntie”) will cost about 20 RMB an hour for regular cleaning work. Some families hire ayis on a full-time basis for cooking and help with raising children. It’s also a great way for your little ones to be exposed to Mandarin. There are essentially two ways to get an ayi: independently through reference OR via agency.

If you need further consulting, check out our forums or visit an agency.

  • Summer is the season that new wave of expats begin to make plans for their move to China. We see the traffic to Shanghaiexpat.com and we see in the questions that come up again and again on the forum. Many will begin to establish relationships with people living here and with possible resources for rentals, language training, schools, services, and more. We are quite fortunate that there are members in the forum who offer their best advice and help make the move easier for the new wave of expats.

  • SHX answers the question that matters most: Which convenience store beer is the best?

In Shanghai, there are means of getting delicious imported and domestic craft beers, but sometimes all you need is a cold, cheap Chinese lager to get your night started. The first bar I hit on a Friday (or Wednesday) night is AllDays where the Reeb is always cold and the smiling cashier-ladies are dressed to impress. And no night out would be complete without an appearance at the new hip French bar “Le Outside of Lawson.” Your local dirty restaurant (家常菜) carries Suntory in lieu of Stella and we expats have to accept that. Not all beers are created equal, and though cheap Chinese alcohol-water does not match its foreign or microbrewed cousins, you’d be surprised how many convenient store beers are actually...tolerable!

  • How can Shanghai be more environmentally conscious? Have you observed bad environmental behaviors on the city streets? Using Shanghai’s capabilities, what can we do to protect this planet? Shanghai has 22 million residents and it is the biggest industry base in China and one of the biggest in the world. It is very important that Shanghai do a better job in environmental protection.

  • Groceries at my doorstep! 2010-06-18 16:13

You just finished work. It’s freezing outside. No wait, its summer. It’s sweltering outside and all you want to do is turn on the AirCon and make yourself a cold smoothie or enjoy an ice cold beer. Damn! Nothing’s in the fridge. I guess you can order from Sherpas for the fifth time this week…OR you could take advantage of one of the many popular means of grocery home delivery. Whether it is fruit, meat, or beer, it is probably available to you.

  • Photography is a passion that occupies most of my vacations and free time. It is for me a way of expressing myself and a way to show others things that I find nice, that lay under our eyes but that most of the time, people oversee because they focus on other things. We look but dont see.
