I think the point is to not force them to "lose" face, not about bowing and scraping to them. If they lose face, they will need to regain face at a later time, and usually at your expense.
By, as you say, not giving an inch, assures you are not doing yourself or your organization any favors. Your way of thinking is naive.

I will say that your response is typical, Jam it down your throat Western.
Many of us on this site have had these strong opinions once, when 1st over here. Most of also learned our lessons the hard way. Especially when in business negotiations.
If you cannot learn to adapt, and understand the Chinese culture, and the way of business, you will not have much real success...Even if you think you might be.

I would like to add that it is OK to fight in public and argue loudly.

In a foreign country, that would cause you to lose face, but here, their system is screwed up.

5. Never take food with the wrong end of your chopsticks
The next time you gather around a dinner table with a Chinese host, you may discover that serving spoons for the many communal dishes are non-existent. This is because everyone serves themselves (or others) by turning their chopsticks upside down to take food from the main dishes before putting the food on the individual plates.

This one I also believe is bull.

I've never seen someone flip their sticks to take things from the main dishes. Same end is used for everything.

Quite simply, the West created the modern world. That is all there is to it. China's challenge is to become more like us. I don't care about making them lose face - losing face is a childish and immature concept. "If you don't do what I want, I will throw ALL my toys out of the cot."

What is naive is thinking that learning how to say "ni hao" and use chopsticks will make these self-centered, lying, cheating people trust you more and treat you better. Do you honestly think your self-degrading attempts to appease them matters at all to them? Before the dinner while you are practicing "fighting for the bill" they have already decided how much to cheat and take advantage of you. When you leave after sipping their tasteless tea, they're laughing at you and your white face, pleased at how much money they've made off of you. These people will sell their children or parents if it means making money or advancing themselves.

Your response it typical ignorant PC-garbage. The next time someone spits onto your shoe I hope you don't get upset and "jam your opinion" down anyone's throat that this is a backwards and dirty country. And incidentally your strongly worded reply is just as much "jamming" opinions down people throat and being intolerant as hundan's. Stop hiding behind your self-righteous mask of being "tolerant", hypocrite.

You will never "understand" and "adapt" enough for these people until you change your hair color, slant your eyes and change your skin color. Until then, you are the western a**hole, just in denial and emasculated. Your belief otherwise reveals your ignorance and how naive YOU are. The next time you try and get on the subway during rush hour, see how far your understanding and tolerance of this society gets you.

Damn...I been bitch slapped, but that's cool. Allot of validity to above comments.
Clearly an emotional topic for many.
My comments were more regarding business negotiations, not necessarily dailylife, hence my references to "business" and "organization". We all gotta do what we think is best at the time and for the situation.

AIB2, congratulations on making it out of the politically correct bogswamp of ideas. I find Westerners who just love China have only a superficial experience of the country, meeting only people who want to make money from them, learn English from them, or even marry them. Especially the less attractive foreigners who are here to pick up a younger partner. Once your Chinese is good enough and you have indepth conversations with Chinese, you really just how awful this country's so-called culture is. They are jealous of us, basically because they really hate who they are.

Have you ever been to hospital and seen how the Hans rush into the lift before the man on crutches can even get out? One theory of mine with respect to Chinese suowei wenhua is that their cultural behaviour and reactions are those of 5 year old children in the West. I cannot go to restaurants at 12 for all the screaming and shouting of the "adults" in the restaurant. Going to the restaurant in England is a totally different experience. Airline staff get special training on dealing with the Hans - the adults are out of their seats all the time screaming and shouting and if I worked on an airline with Chinese passengers, I would just go mad. Yelang zida - is a Chinese chengyu. It describes how they insolently think they have culture when they have none. If you really had the greatest culture in the world, you would have made the modern world. Look at Hong Kong - an impressive city solely because of British rule. And had it been continually under Chinese rule, what would have been there instead? Reflect on the answer, and bow your heads in shame.

If those are the only Westerners you can find, it seems your experience is the one that's superficial.

What kind of idiot goes to a common restaurant in Shanghai expecting a quiet meal? You know you're not in England. People here want to have a good time when they go out to eat.

AIB2 I think I owe you an apology. I won't repeat my views of your other posts but I think you are spot on here. Maybe a bit over the top for my taste but hey ho...
And I have to agree with Hundan when he said losing face was an immature and childish concept.
But I also love it here, and the Chinese I have come across, so that makes me superficial in Hundan's opinion. Ah well...

you may have overlooked the fact that "typical ignorant PC-garbage" also originated in the west. but i guess it's not considered hypocritical or shortsighted to praise your own culture based solely on its triumphs while berating another's only for its shortcomings

dont get me wrong, there are plenty of chinese habits/customs/viewpoints that i find less than appealing. try being raised in a western country by chinese parents w/ such views. it makes for a rather dysfunctional teenagehood. nevertheless, i still love certain aspects of chinese culture and i don't think your distaste for the other aspects warrants such a strong generalization about an entire country and its people. even as an american i can say that this is the kind of attitude that makes other countries hate us. as if effed up **** doesn't happen in the US, like people wanting to revive the confederate and name their children adolf hitler -_-

but what do i know, i'm just a 21 year old who has only spent part of her toddlerhood in china, so it's quite possible that i'm not as familiar with all of the intricacies of chinese (as well as american) culture as a worldly man such as yourself :P

Number 7 isn't exactly relevant to Shanghai. Sure, from time to time you see people arguing over the bill but generally, Shanghainese are happy to to go by the "you invited me so I guess you're paying" rule. And of course, the fighting over the bill ONLY occurs among men - women will not even pretend to reach for their purse lest they be seen as lacking in enough value to be wined and dined . I find the whole paying the bill competition (charade?) more common among northern people as it seems to lead to gaining face. In Shanghai, face is nothing unless you're saving money

Wouldn't fly with the PC crowd but stay here for long enough and realize this is as accuratae an assessment of contemporary Chinese culture you can get to without going bats#it mental. Then again, stay here long enough and you're already going to be batsh*t mental, delusional, and with patches of trauma, jadedness, and sometimes apathy...

Sure, small formalities might be enough to create a bit of an impression at a first time business dinner with pig farmer turned malamine wholeseller, but most of these little rules are hardly used in daily life by locals. Frankly, sometimes seeing these Hanner than Han faux Da Shans trying so hard really looks ridiculous and contrived.

To say that the Chinese don't have a culture is absolutely absurd. This is a culture which has evolved over two thousand years, has been oppressed and liberated only to be subjugated over and over again. In the past century alone, the Chinese have had to adapt to tragedies and evolutions and dramatic changes in cultural identity that emulate those in the west but have happened at a much faster rate. It's not about being politically correct, it's about being open minded and realising that yes, many things in China are incredibly infuriating and confusing, but there's usually a reason behind the bahaviour. How many of you are getting something from Shanghai that you can't get in your own country? Let's face it, the Chinese must be doing something right...they pretty much own the world. Get down off of your elevated bigot platform and open your eyes. The world is changing, we are no longer the kings and there is SO much for us to learn. Just as I hate the fact that so many people who have been given a home in England complain about the British, I find it disgusting to hear so many foreigners complaining about the Chinese. If you don't like it, GO HOME!! Except you can't, because there's very little to go home to! As for the way the Chinese interact out on the streets...this is a country of 1.3 BILLION, we have no idea how that has formed their concept of politeness and courtesy and from the looks of this forum, many of you can't even be arsed to try and understand.
