When we visit Shanghai this August what trips or activities will most interest our 17 year old daughter?

Shopping for fake bags/merchandise? Going on a local food tour? Drinking at Familymart with Gay Chevara? Really it depends on what she likes, if you even know. Teenagers can be cryptic.

What is she into? Besides shopping, what would she like to do?

Is she interested in visiting museums? There are quite some places to go like the Science and Technology Museum, and some artsy stuff in Moganshan Road and Tianzifang. There's a Madame Tussauds wax museum, too.

How about diving with sharks in Shanghai Aquarium?

In August? I think she'll be happy sitting quietly anywhere there is air conditioning.

We had our 16 year old nephew here a few years ago. He really enjoyed it ( at least from what we could see ) . A few days, we hired a tour guide that was close to his age and had good english to take him around the city ( other than places we took him to) . He also just like walking around the streets and park taking pictures. He enjoyed every time we went out to eat. After a couple weeks, he had eaten a lot of chinese and started wanting burgers and pizza again. We had him do some photo stories and put them up on a site so he could show his friends. It was a pretty good experience. He really missed his friends ( so you might want to see she has access to facebook )
If you need a decent v-p-en, pm me for one that works well.

If she likes night life there's lots of clubs that young people go to. I'm amazed at how many young teens seem to be invading this city. Or perhaps I am just getting old.

It really depends on what type of girl she is. Most 17 year old girls like to go clubbing or want to, but if she's got no friends to go with...

Make sure you have a VPN so she can be on facebook or her favourite network site and be able to instant message her friends during any hours of the day or night. Expect that she will sleep during the day, most of the day and be away all night on the computer.
Take her shopping at night when at least it is dark, if not cooler, to the places that sell fake goodies. Night clubs where the young cute teens from international schools like to hang out so she can add lifelong friends to her facebook page.

If she is more of a nerdy girl then she will like some of the above but probably you can factor in museums, a gallery or two and maybe the orchestra.

Make sure she has a camera to take lots of photos to put on her facebook page.

Get her a sim card and credits so she can continue to text her friends at home. She will at all times be conducting banal exchanges with at least three or more "friends" via the phone or computer.

A Teenager's viewpoint and advice

by Damon Lee (2005 graduate of the Shanghai American School)

Hola to all you teens out there who may be moving to Shanghai in the near future! I know all too well what you may be thinking. First of all, you must be thinking to yourself: China? Are you serious? Isn’t China a third world country? Dirty, poor and infected by disease – come on, SARS! This must be the end of the world! Fear not my fellow teens because before you start dreading about these horrid stereotypes commonly associated with China, let me tell you a little about life in Shanghai as a teenager.

Hi, yes I'm a teen. Quite frankly, there wont be much for Shanghai Rich's daughter to do other than the usual shopping and sight seeing if she's not the particular kind of girl that can mingle with strangers without any friends. I also doubt the OP would let her daughter go out drinking and clubbing by herself. And if she's like any other teen, she wont want to go outside in 30˚C+ looking at old rivertowns that all look the same or museums that she could see at home.

There's always the top of the Financial tower, the Pearl tower, and then subway underground shopping and East Nanjing Rd, as well as the fake markets. The Bund at night is always something to see, you could take her to see both sides on different days. As for local eats... stay with restaurants you'd find in shopping centers. Jade Garden isn't bad, at least in my opinion.

I absolutely categorically agree.

That particular area of the French Concession has enough Foreign elements
that a teen will not get too homesick, but there are also hundreds of places
within a five minutes walk to see and do. It is also right on the metro line 9
Dapuqiao Lu. station. If I were raising American children here, this is without
any doubt the are I would feel most comfortable, your daughter will get a well
rounded concept of what this place is really like. I say this knowing that the
"expat areas" in PuDong look like they could be easily transplanted into the
Chicago suburbs, but that is certainly not the view I would like my children to
see of a modernizing China.
There is also a good ice cream place in the mall right next to the metro.
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
