Benoist, I would love to take as many people as possible, but i guess it is littlefox's call to decide if more than 2 souls should go to such a romantic place such as Ipanema....;)

Remember the magical song...ethernal...timeless...sexy like a black cat with green eyes music called....

The Girl from Ipanema
(Original lyrics, in Portuguese by Vinicius de Moraes)

Look, what a most beautiful thing there
moreover full of grace
and she, this girl that comes and goes
with this sweet swinging gait, along the way to the sea. . . .
The girl with this golden body from the Ipanema sun
Her swinging gait is more than a poem
and the most beautiful thing that I ever saw go by

Ah! why am I so alone?
Ah! why is everything so sad?
Ah! the beauty that is there!
The beauty that is not just mine . . .
that is also passing by alone.

Ah! if she only knew that when she passes by
the world is smiling
filling up with grace
and turns more beautiful
because of love
because of love
because of love

Oh boy, I'm getting nostalgic now <HC searches for CDs from back home in the dusty dark closet>
sniff....sniff....

Ok, back to the original topic

A very beautiful song. Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz, my all time favourite jazz musicians.

Littlefox, I am actually making plans for my Spring Break! Here are a few places on top of my list:
Yunan, Li Jiang(丽江)
Sichuan, Shangarila(香格里拉)
Sichuan, Jiu Zai Go(九寨沟)

IF go abroad, it's has to be Thailand. Really need to get out of this damp grey place. Have a good one!

Hong Kong for fairly reasonable too! Around 3000rmb last I looked for around 5 days 4 nights including RT tickets! Not bad considering tickets alone cost 2200!

Professional Secretaries can fly United to San Francisco for around 2400 this month I think (call UA for details).

Jane's suggestion sounds reasonable for me. Lijiang is such a beautiful place. Shangarila sounds not bad too :P

It's safer if you go to Lijiang. Shanghai (and your sghexpt.com fan-club) will thank you for not going so far away as Ipanema, although now that the original Girl from Ipanema is almost 60, they are looking for new candidates. Oh my. I am typing too much today I guess.
Anyway, go straight to Yangshuo, it's better than Lijiang. And please bring me some Asterix books in Chinese as I can't find them here. I know there is a tiny bookstore in Yangshuo that has them.

Have a safe trip, take care, don't talk with strangers.

Mmm....I am nearly convinced that from Shanghai to Kuming-Dali-Lijiang can make a perfect week long (9day) trip. Check out this website.

Did anyone ever travel by train? Is it worth the time? Is the route scenic?

Lijiang now probably is quite touristy...I was in Lijiang the past X'mas and CNY holiday...not very much tourists there and nice! There is a cosy bookstore cum coffee shop cum DVD shop in Lijiang YMCA, where I spent almost whole week reading and having fun there, sitting around the fireplace, chatting, fooling around with all kinds of local instruments, dancing, or just starring at the fire...gangs of interesting people there too. Oh, it is called "海子书馆" - 海子, is the name of a Chinese contemporary poet, very famous guy.

I would say Dali is not as good as than Lijiang, too commercialized but very foreigner-friendly.

From Shanghai to Kunming if travel by train is about 40 hours. If you can get a soft-bed room with roommates that get off at other stops in-middle, and the conductor happens to like you, then you can "engross" the room the rest of the trip and it was really nice!! :)

From Kunming to Dali if by train, is about 6-7 hours. There are overnight trains between the two places.

From Dali to Lijiang is about 2 hours' drive.

However, 9 days may be enough for just visiting...definately not enough to enjoy the lifestyles and cultures.

D
It's just my imagination
It's all about illusion
But I'd rather stay here in suspension
at least, the chance's 50-50
and I seem to be NOT that desperate, miserable and stupid that I have been crying for no one all the time
