Abortion questions

Postby vc329 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 12:17 am

After searching for answers on abortion in shanghai and finding these threads:
http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/phpbbforum/abortion-in-shanghai-t84952.html
http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/phpbbforum/i-need-an-abortion-t100379.html
there are still some questions that I'd like to ask about having an abortion in Shanghai.
- What is the price of medical procedures and surgical procedures?
- What things do I have to bring with me? This includes things like ID, insurance, documents etc. (Parental supervision?)

Any other additional information that may be helpful would be really appreciated.

No conservative or inappropriate comments please. Keep them to yourselves.

I went to the hospital today, the 411 one.
First, I called ahead to make sure they do abortions, and I think the lady made an appointment for me. In Chinese, abortion is liu2chan3 (流产). Once I got there, I paid 12.5 kuai to gua hao, or register. Then the nurses at the counter told me to wait outside the doctor's office. The doctor asked questions such as: When was your last period? Are you positive?
After this, I was given a slip of paper with no instructions. I asked the nurses and they said to go to the cashier. I was to pay 70 for a sonogram. The sonogram was a floor up, and after that was done, I figured I was supposed to go down to the doctor again. She then looked at the sonogram, then filled out some more forms for me to take to the cashier. The total was 304 kuai for some tests. These tests included heart rate upstairs, a swab, and a prick of the finger. After that was done, I went back to the doctor. She told me my options, both surgical: 420 for no anesthetic, and 900 for anesthetic. With not enough money on me, I decided to go back another day. She advised me next time to bring at least 1000 for some extra medication that may be needed.
My chinese isn't as good as it should be, but I believe she mentioned the pills, which were up to the thousands. 2000, 3000. However, I can't be sure.
If any of you go, you should really be able to speak chinese, or bring someone that can translate for you. Even if you can speak chinese well, it's best to bring a friend to support you, whether they wait outside or go in with you.

vc: You are very brave to go on your own.
Thanks for sharing the details, it may help others.

Actually the costs do not seem too horific. Could you find a local friend to go with you, and cry hard up, and NEGOTIATE. Being a Govt. hospital, they can do the procedure for free, and often do.
The medication seems the expensive part, and may, or may not be necessary. prob. not.
My wife may go with you, but out of town at the moment.
Good luck. 8) stay cool.

When the doctor found out I didn't have enough money, she worked it out and could have done it for 620. 420 for the doctor fee, and 200 for some anesthetic, which is usually 470. I didn't have 620 either, so the doctor gave me her cell phone to call when I do have 900. I may call when I have around 700, and ask if she can do it for 620.

Monalisalee: If you're wife comes back in the next few days, could you inform me?

Madmen: Thank you :)

Just for reference for anyone looking at abortion, though this is for a foreigners medical clinic in Ningbo (not SH) however there is loads of useful information (not just on abortion)... http://ningbofmc.weebly.com/elective-te ... rtion.html Incidentally Ningbo is 250km south of Shanghai and is around 2.5hr & RMB100 by bus that leaves from the SH South Rail Station.

Mabe I'm old fashoned, but in my opinion this is not the sort of thing that you try too hard to save money over.

I'm sure you could get it done with a coathanger in some back alley for 20 kuai if you were really desperate, but looking after your health is important.

Also where is the other party responsible for putting you in this predicament? It was my understanding that it is a Chinese tradition that the man pay for the cost of the abortion.

I assume she's an expat and that's why she's asking on here? I've known a few expat women who have experienced a pregnancy scare here and one unplanned pregnancy where the girl went back home to have the baby and the guy (western) is still here. Given the increasing number of western female students in Shanghai, money for access to western-style clinics might be an increasing problem. I think I ended up with fake bc pills once from the local green-cross pharmacies, so now I'm paying a higher price for pills from United Family Hospital.

Any decision is going to be tough--good luck with everything, vc329. Make sure you go to a clean, safe place.

I think it's likely, the OP did not tell him, or want to.
She does not appear to have parental support, and very little other support. Sad.
Water under the bridge now.
She has made her own decision, and that is the hardest part done.

There are so many subjective elements that need to taken into consideration, before any one of us can or should judge those involved and the respective decisions they make. Even more so, that we have really no entitlement whatsoever to make such judgements in the first place.

I'm sure you are aware of this but don't forget there are limits on abortion (normally 24 weeks - though not sure about China) and I believe the procedure is much less invasive in the first 12 weeks? So if your mind is made up then you may want to think about borrowing the money from friends rather than waiting to save? I hope it all goes well for you!

Re: Abortion questions

Postby vc329 » Fri Jul 09, 2010 2:25 am

Alright, well if anyone's interested, I went in this Tuesday, which was a week after I saw the doctor.

I went in, took a number, went into the doctor's office, and she asked how much money I brought. Apparently surgical abortions need an adult to sign, but me being a few months shy of 18, the doctor said that my boyfriend who is also still 17, could sign with me together. After she filled out a few forms for me to take to the cashier. I paid 842.9 RMB total. I believe the only thing the doctor didn't give me was the yianshui, which I don't really know what it's for.

I recieved some medication, apparently to fight infection, and then I was taken to the surgical room. The place itself is kind of small. I was told to wait on the benches with the other women. 7 beds were in 2 rooms. I sat there kind of awkwardly listening to women of all ages conversing. Many had the yianshui (drip bag) but one or two didn't have it either. When I was called, I was taken to a small locker room to put my pants, and because I didn't bring a pad with me, one was given to me. I was led into a room where 2 surgeries could be performed at the same time. I took off my underwear, laid down, and was disinfected.

Having had to recieve 7 needles before I moved to China, I'm no longer scared of needles, but I don't like to watch. I believe one of those tube like needles were stuck into my hand. I was then given the painkillers through that tube, and although that bit hurt I was asleep in 5 seconds. When I woke up, I was in one of those 7 beds, underwear on, pants by my side, small band aids on the back of my hands, small grazes on my legs, and a minor cramp. I believe the grazes were from me bumping into a desk on the way to the bed while I was still semi unconscious, or from the straps they used to secure me to the bed. I was conscious enough to call my boyfriend notifying that I was done, and that if he wants, he can go to the bathroom or get something to eat. I fell asleep after I hung up and awoke a few minutes later fully conscious.

After the nurse was sure that I was no longer dizzy, she let me go. My stomach hurt just a little afterwards. After a few hours, it was gone. The band aids I had on the back of my hands revealed a small prick on each hand with a rather large bruise. I imagine one was from the painkiller needle, and the other was to wake me. Those hurt for a while, and the bruises are there after a few days. I am to return to the doctor after 7 days to make sure the procedure was successful.

This recount is for girls like me who really wanted some information to feel less stressed. The ordeal really wasn't that bad.

And if anyone is curious (and let's be honest, who wasn't) I did tell my boyfriend. He was more worried about it than I was and he did help me pay :)

Thank you for everyone's support, I really appreciate it.

Nice your boyfriend did the decent thing, many would not.
Just be careful in future, and beware fake B/C pills, but you already know this.
Truly pleased it went well for you.

Is the age factor especially important? Would it be impossible to get an abortion if you are not nearly 18? Or is this just at the 411 hospital?

The website for 411 is www.dlrk.dl.gov.cn It is in Chinese.
The hospital specialises in abortions, and therefore are very experienced. I may be wrong, but understand they operate on kids as young as 12. My guess would be that there would be more questions in that case, and parental or friend support.

Well, this being China, you need a passport, or I.D. card just to do a transaction in the bank.
According to the OP, she needed an adult's signature.

OP, my post isn't so helpful for you, but hopefully someone researching this topic in the future might find the information useful...

Birth control pills, when taken in high doses, can be used as morning after pills, like Plan B. Here's a link to a website with information on it, including a table telling you how many pills to take for each brand of birth control: http://ec.princeton.edu/questions/dose.html

if the link is broken, you could find similar information by googling, "emergency contraception using birth control pills."

The hospital doesn't actually check any sort of identification, and if I was confident enough, I could have said I was above 18 and gotten away with it. They didn't check my boyfriend's either. Bring cash so everything goes fast and smooth.
------

Just thought to add some additional information for anyone that wants to know:
In Pudong, there is a pharmacy near Jinqiao. They sell birth control pills as well as morning after pills without need of prescription or ID (because lets be realistic, it's China)

The morning after pills are 26 kuai and the birth control pills are 38 or something. The birth control pills are the 21 packs.

The pharmacy is located in a compound, which is located at the corner of Biyun Road and Baihua Road. It's diagonally across from SPR coffee. I think the pharmacy is closed on Sunday, and is opened until 7pm from Monday to Friday and 6pm on Saturday.

I think the fastest way to get there is to take the Metro line 2 to either Shanghai Science and Technology Museum or Century Park, or line 7 to Huamu Road. Huamu Road station is closest but it really isnt worth the extra stop or transfer if you're not located on line 7 already. From those stations, a taxi would be the fastest. Usually taxi drivers would turn onto Biyun Road as soon as they can, and travel up it to get to Baihua Road. If they do so, turn left into Baihua Road and stop the taxi. There should be a gate into a compound and steps leading down. Straight ahead should be the pharmacy, which is next to some furniture shop if I recall correctly.

-------
Second edit in 24 hours, sorry!

Anyways, I looked the pharmacy up.

Here are some links:
shanghai-parkway-community-pharmacy-t97402.html
http://www.parkwaycommunitypharmacy.com ... fault.aspx

The thread is pretty useful already, and the OP answers questions about their stock, but if that doesn't satisfy your curiosity, then the check out their website.

I just have been to RuiJin Hospital
Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
Add:No.197,Rui Jin Er Road,Shanghai 200025 China
Zip Code:200025
Telephone:(86-21)64370045
Email:ruijin @rjh.com.cn
building one 7th floor (outpatients)
it is very clean and fast, of course a "chinese" option for who cannot afford to pay a foreigner clinic but nothing to be afraid, just go with a chinese friend if you cannot speak a little chinese to be sure you understand everything, you have to register and go to different floors for the exams, you can do everything in 1 morning then they will tell you which method
I had surgery, (every Tue and Thur) very fast and no pain, they dismiss you almost straight away so don't expect to stay in the hospital
cost is around 1000 CNY including anesthesia
positive experience
