Adele wins 5 Grammys

Just a few minutes ago she got best album to add to record of the year, song of the year, best solo pop vocal, best pop solo performance. Nice to see a Brit clean up for a change.

Down-to-earth artist, great voice, great songs. She's the natural successor to Annie Lennox.

She's almost TOO down to earth. Have you seen her Albert Hall concert DVD? There's one song where she starts then stops and says "sh1t note, let me start again" and then starts again. Refreshing!

Just for comparison, while watching the Grammys with one eye, I decided to listen to a few Annie Lennox tunes. Found this performance on youtube - I hadn't seen it before. If you can watch this without tearing up a little you've never been through a bad breakup of a love affair or marriage.

Adele's still very young. If she continues to develop, she could end up a superstar - that voice is marvellous. But time will tell - it seems life has to be hard on artists or they can't retain their "soul". After all, what happy person can write and perform with the emotional authenticity of Lennox in "Why"? The happy ones end up like Paul McCartney, writing "Silly love songs".

Seriously? People still watch the Grammys? People still give a flying f*** through a rolling donut what the Grammys have to say about anything?

If the record industry has anything to say about it she'll be another Whitney Houston.

Yes, I am a sucker for award events, I'll admit it. Grammys, BAFTAs and of course, the Oscars. I might not agree with all the decisions but when they get it right, it's quite heart warming to see someone who deserves recognition make a heartfelt emotional acceptance speech.

Oscars can be entertaining purely from a pop-cultural standpoint. I.e. to see which direction the winds of popular thought are blowing the industry. But the Grammys? Man they are the WORST. Completely, and not even subtly rigged.

I don't take the winners seriously I just enjoy the performances and speeches. So Jennifer Hudson's tribute to Whitney for example. I'll never agree with all the decisions, rigged or not.

Oscars are always interesting to see who embarrasses themselves, who scores points and who decides to take some sort of nutbar political stance. Somehow an issue always comes up every year. Also because nobody genuinely knows who is in that little envelope.
