ADSL in villas and apartment for expat

Postby fox007 » Wed Apr 06, 2005 4:01 pm

Hi,
I will be moving to Shg in a few months and I wonder if I can get an fast ADSL internet line (or thru cable) in all/most apartments and villas for expat in Changning, Minhang, Putuo or Pudong district as it is never mentionned on the real estate website ?
In general, should the landlord apply himself to the telecom company ?
Any idea of the cost ? Who is the best ISP offering the fastest connection nowadays in Shg ?

Any suggestion about Fast internet access welcome !!!
Thank you

Hi, fox007

I have never seen a property where some sort of fast internet line wasn't available, whether it was Cable modem or ADSL. This includes the farther away villas in Minghang and Pudong.

Generally in serviced apartments and managed villa compounds the infrastructure is in place for high speed Internet, however when you move in it will need to be applied for and signed for. Those steps will likely be done through the management office and billed directly to you. Consider it a bit of a bonus if you are able to show up in housing without having to wait three weeks for your broadband. For those three weeks dial up or internet cafes are good alternatives.

For privately owned apartments, the landlord can assist you in setting up the highspeed connection, or you can ask him to do it and reimburse him accordingly. Most new buildings are prewired for ADSL, and if not, cable modem is an easy alternative.

Hope this helps,

Hi Michael,
Thanks a lot for this information.
Are they various ISP in SHG and if so, is there one that you would recommend ? Do you know if there is a fast ADSL2 (up to 20 Mb/sec) available in SHG ?
Thanks,
F

Search the Technology section here as there have been many previous conversations about this. The concensus seems to be that whatever the spec or the price, nothing seems to be faster than the cheapest normal connection.
