Advice for Expected-Asking Pay/Salary

Postby Bleuwhale » Fri Oct 17, 2008 1:59 pm

Greetings All.

I humbly seek your insight as to the pay that a Graduate Student may expect if working in Shanghai and with a local Chinese listed company.

I am a graduate student at Harvard University and will be completing my Master's coursework soon. Am looking at obtaining employment in the areas of Business Strategy / Business Development or Real Estate Finance and Investment.

Although I have worked in a law firm (Singapore) for 1 year and had served in the military for 2 more (international crisis management), assuming, as with most undergrads / graduate students, that I have little or no direct experience, what should I reasonable expect if I desire to work in Shanghai? I speak fluent English, Chinese and have associations with high level government Chinese officials and corporate titans from the asia-pacific region.

What does concern me is (1) the rumoured lower pay in China and (2) the "excessively high" personal income tax rate.

Once again, I humbly seek your kind advice and may be best reached through private posting or at bleuwhale@hotmail.com. Alternatively, the below poll may be much speedier - I trust that you would provide a bona fide response based on good will.

Much Indebted.

Thank you

I would say 20,000RMB a month max. But you could get lucky.

tomnoddy; of course, I think 6000RMB /month would be average. If he gets into a good company, who really like the fact that he's a Harvard grad then it may jump up... 10-15,000/month maybe.

20K would not be out of the question, although, as I mentioned, he could get some lucky break and be offered more...

It all depends on what skills he brings to the table that a Chinese local (on 4000RMb/month) doesn't
