Airlines.....rip off?

Postby shanghaiceltic » Tue Jul 24, 2007 3:57 pm

Just been trying to book some flights to the UK in September for a sales conference.

Virgin quoting RMB 7,260 plus 2000 in taxes

BA quoted me 9,020 on a Thursday flight plus 2000 taxe but if I fly on a Saturday I can fly for 6,350 plus 200 taxes. Same seats, same economy class, but nearly 2,500 more.

The lass in the office told me that they always have prices varying like this. Flights out here are getting very expensive.

Any suggestions?

you could also fly with other airlines and have a stop-over in Paris, Helsinki, Moscow,Dubai etc...
you could try www.opodo.com for some price comparisons.

Its not varying prices, Saturday stay overs will always be less expensive then flying during the same week. It has been standard in the airline industry every since i can remember.

Nothing new, and not some form of rip off.

They are all the same.Look at the websites of Lufthansa and KLM.Going a day earlier or later makes hell of a difference and yes,you are right, same inedible food, same arrogant cabin staff and unacceptable restrictions .

Yes, this isn't some kind of scam it's supply and demand just as fares are more expensive at Christmas than in November. Very good advice (if cost is an issue) given already which is to fly Finnair through Helsinki or some other indirect route (Air France vis Paris etc) which is often much better value although personally I would rather spend the extra and fly direct.

And there's always China Eastern which generally are cheaper than UK based carriers, but you get what you pay for generally.

I hear that as load has picked up on the UK-China leg both BA and Virgin are finally starting to turn a profit (they've been loss making on SH route) and so might feel more confident in jacking up prices now.

Remember that I paid RMB 4,500 + taxes return when going back to the UK last March and in Oct. This Sept am paying around RMB 5,500 + taxes so more expensive.

Cheaper, that is if you're not paying the AF fare for a flight operated by CE!

Airlines are also constantly slowly increasing their prices to recover their losses from huge increase in fuel prices. They could not increase at the same rate the fuel costs went up as they would have lost too many customers. Air fares are still a real bargain compared to what they were 20 years ago.
