Alcohol & Food Delivery

Postby mat » Tue Apr 01, 2008 12:13 pm

There are a few great threads going on at the moment about what restaurants are good, bad etc... also, some others regarding people wanting wine delivered. I thought i would summarise them all here for all to view and try. I have included my own personal comments, which you may or may not agree with.

Please try to keep this thread clean (ie, no "they are crap" etc..) Informative comments, praises and criticisms welcome and appreciated. Also, please feel free to add to the list.

**I also declare that i have an interest in one of the companies listed below.

WINE (there are many other wine importers and outlets, these are the ones i know to deliver)

Torres - www.torreschina.com
Nice site, easy to navigate, specialties are port and Spanish wines. Peter Lehman and Rochford from Australia are two of my personal favourites (and in fact i hooked them up with Torres). Good feature of this site is Bin Ends. Check it out for some specials. Another good feature is the Mixed cases.

ASC - www.asc-wines.com
Big selection of big name wines. ASC in the news at the moment for the wrong reasons, but once that is behind them they will come back as big and powerful as ever. The new site is a lot cleaner than it used to be. Good solid selection at reasonable prices. They also do Riedel glassware (best around)

Ruby Red - www.rubyred.com.cn
Run by Simon, who is undoubtably one of the best wine brains in town. This fella knows his stuff. Specialising in Kiwi wines, but with an ever increasing list of worldwide wines, the site is easy to navigate, and their prices are good. Try the Hollick and Penbro reds from Oz, and the THE (Terrace Hill Estate) Sauvignon Blanc from NZ.

Globus - www.globus-wine.com
Website very basic with not even a list of wines. They do deliver though. Keep an eye on this, or check out their shop. Hopefully they can sort their site out and allow people to browse their selection.

Summergate -
I'll update this when/if they finally get their website up. Absolutely shameful that the best wine distributor in China cannot get this sorted. I'm good mates with the owner, and i have told him. Apparently coming soon. They do home deliver if you ring them, but wait for the site.

Yangjiu - www.yangjiu.com
Never used them, site looks cheap and their wines a bit on the nasty side. Not sure. Anyone tried them? let me know.

WINE & OTHER

JustBeer - www.justbeer.cn & www.justdrinks.cn
Not JUST beer, but that is their speciality. Also doing a small but tight selection of wines, Perrier water home delivered, as well as Meat Pies from Kooka Pies. The beer is what its about. Australian beers at great prices. Keep looking for new products arriving mid May. Site being completely rebuilt and will be relaunched in next few days. Top blokes that run this as well!!

Elders - www.elders.com.cn
Specialists in Aussie Meat (Beef, lamb, snags etc..). Also importers of Coopers beer from Oz, and some wine labels. The Taltarni Wines are great.

MEAT etc...

Kooka Pies - www.kookapies.com
GREAT Aussie style meat pies & Sausage rolls. Also they are doing some other Aussie favourites such as Pavlova and lamingtons.

Shanghai Pie - www.shanghaipie.com
More great Aussie style pies. More gourmet than Kookas pies. Their Sausage rolls are SENSATIONAL.

Meat & More - Website coming soon
As good as, if not better than, the imported Aussie and US meat available. This stuff is great and well priced. Specialties in beef, but also lamb, Chicken etc.... ring Jun direct on 13681618000 for price list. When the website is up i will update this.

MEAL DELIVERY

Sherpas - www.sherpa.com.cn
This is the first website address you learn when in town. The original, and still the best by a long way. The website is good, with now a massive selection of restaurants. Pick your restaurant, make your order and wait the 45 mins or so for you meal. You do pay a premium, but heh, it's worth it. They also deliver some other general day items such as beer and condoms. What more do you need?

Mealbay - www.mealbay.com.cn
Absolutely blatant rip off of Sherpas, down to the menu (orginally) and even product codes etc... As far as i'm concerned they are not getting my business for this fact alone, but worth a try i suppose. A smaller list than Sherpas.

There are other new ones such as KK Rabbit etc... I will leave them alone for now.

CIGARETTES

I'm not a smoker so not an expert. At The Shed, we ring some bloke on 53067087 and he brings a couple of cartons of fags around. That is the Taikang Lu area only i would assume.

BREAD

Abendbrot - www.abendbrot.com.cn
I don't know a lot about them, HC is the expert, but looking at their site worth a try. A bit of criticism though on delivery. It looks hard to work out when delivery dates/times are for each area. Maybe they could tidy this up a bit.

As mentioned, feel free to add to this. Of course a lot of other individual restaurants will deliver. I don't think it's necessary to include those on this list.

What I really need is a grocery delivery service (and not when you go to the store physically first and buy, but an internet system).

Meat and Seafood home delivery

Postby soulexplorer » Tue Apr 01, 2008 2:12 pm

There's a company named P.R.I.M.E. Meats & Seafood that sell great meat and seafoods for home delivery (as well as restaurants). They have stuff from all over the world and you get it for wholesale prices you'll never get at expat supermarkets---it comes frozen though so you have to have room in your freezer.

My family has a BBQ with others in our complex once a month and we get the US beef steaks.....its so nice to have real meat again! We have ordered a lot of their products and never had a problem. I don't think they have a website yet but the sales guy's email is jp@czctrading.com

If you email them they will send you a price list.

Great thread Mat. You have just given a few companies some new business!

I tried out Abendbrot the other day after HCs thread. I ordered a loaf of the Bavarian bread and some Croissants. On their site they say the delivery time is 'til 7am' but my bread turned up at 8.10. Not a huge problem as I wasn't rushing to work that day anyway. Croissants were a little sweet and not to my taste. The Bavarian was superb though and I'll be trying more of their loaves over the next few weeks. They only deliver once a week to my area.

Anyone know who imports English beers here? I want to encourage someone to import Adnams beers.

Disagree on MealBay vs Sherpas in some ways with you Mat. I have no vested interest in either but do know that the concept is not unique so any second or third or even fourth delivery service will be highly similar to Sherpas. Thats said, here is my take on it.

Sherpas- has a handle on more of the old timers and some of the more established restaurants and is the largest delivery service at this point. But, if it were not for Mealbay and their entrance into the market, their service would have remained consistantly fair without attempt for improvement. A former staff member once mentioned that a client called to complain and after it was resolved, the operator was told by a certain manager, "Don't worry, they will be back, there is no one else anyhow." Well competition improves things for us consumers.

Mealbay- got a rocky start after their menu appeared as a blatant copy of Sherpas, but it has evolved and with a new book out this week, I think its time to take another look. First off, their new menu does not have any mark ups on food. Food prices in the MealBay Menu are the SAME as at the restaurant. It has always been the restaurants that have insisted upon the cost increase, but no more. Mealbay's new policy is that any fees to the restaurant are not to be added to the food cost to the consumers. ALSO, fixed delivery fees. One of the things that pissed me off the most was the fact that different restaurants had different fees when i used Sherpas. I now know with Mealbay my delivery is 15rmb. Period.

Nearly every single restaurant and food cart in this place will deliver. However, instead of having 1 Million phone numbers posted on this thread, as mentioned a the top, lets keep it clean, and limited to those places that deliver a selection of different items. Not single restaurants.

I have to disagree with Mat here on the "Meat & More" company. Cheap meat that's cheap quality--definitely not better than Aussie or US meat. My first warning was the "price list" as a poorly managed word document. Disappointing.
Elders is ok for some stuff but don't really care about the customer and quality doesn't justify the prices.
I READILY agree with Soulexplorer on the P.R.I.M.E Meats delivery. Excellent quality meats at very affordable prices--only problem was they come frozen but once thawed and thrown on the grill they are superb!

Many a place starts small, as this place has. If they save money on the price list and pass the savings on to the knowledgeable consumer, i don't have a problem with that.

Great thread, thx Mat!

I'd add a few companies that we use for ourselves:

Coffee

http://www.arabicaroasters.com

Good selection of coffee, including some organic blends, at reasonable prices.

Yogurt

order@bebemamie.com

Excellent yogurts, delivered weekly. They seem to have a reputation for a somewhat rough customer service, but we never had trouble with them so far.

Olive oil, olives, spreads, vinegar, etc

http://www.finigate.com

Really excellent stuff, at good prices. They are more of a wholesaler, but they do deliver to private customers as well (with some minimum order amount).

Lastly, Mat's critique about our own Globus site is well noted and accepted - we are working on it. At the moment you can only download a catalog of our own imports from the site and then call or email us for delivery. Proper functionality should come online soon.

Cheers,

Globus

in a hitch, several familymarts around town will deliver booze (absolut, jack... it differs with each shop) if you call and ask and they have an available delivery person.

you need to live within a k or 2, you need to speak chinese and you often need to remind them that they have delivered before as they usually say that they do not deliver.

I have had great experiences with both Summergate and Torres. Just email summergate and they will send you their inventory and price list.

Mat, totally agree with you on Rochford and Hollick. Two very fine Aussie wine! I am still waiting to try the award winning Macedon 03 though.

Hi
Two weeks ago, I started my internship in a big company that sell luxurious products. I wanted to have a professional experience in Shanghai, but I think I made the wrong choice. I learn things like secretary stuff, such as looking for our customers gift ideas. My boss wants to offer gift to our best clients, so for us to keep their loyalty. I was thinking about alcohol and food delivery service, which would be quiet easy and fast. But since there are lots of e-commerce over here, I'd like to know if you have some advise for me. According to your experience, which companies gave you satisfaction regarding the quality of their products and service?
Many thanks for your help.

You should probably start this question in a another topic of its own as it has little to do with the topic of this thread.
