Just like it says.. a forum for discussion of these things.

Alien Employment Permit, who should have it, me or employer?

Postby powderfinger » Tue Sep 16, 2008 11:15 pm

I have a question about the 'Alien Employment Permit'. I have a job, so I assume that I have one, but I have never seen it. I am told that it is a red book. Is this right?

If I want to change jobs, will I have to be in possession of this book? At the moment my employer has it (I presume). Is it possible to change jobs without this book? If my boss wants to block me from leaving the company--or from working elsewhere, can he do this by not giving me this document? I do not know what the process is.

I have checked the forums and there do not seem to be specific questions about this.

Thanks in advance

The permit is only valid for the job you currently have. If you physically had the permit book, it would do you no good now or in the future except to help show proof of employment (now) when renting an apartment, etc.. When you leave a job the permit is cancelled regardless of who physically holds the permit. However, everyone I know holds on to their own alien employment permits.

If you have a residence permit in your passport then there must be an alien employment permit. If you have a Z visa, then I don't know if there must be an AEP.
