"Antique" Asian furniture

Postby thewalrus » Wed Oct 19, 2005 6:47 pm

Question into ?°Antique?± furniture ¨C my partner and I spent up big on the weekend at ASIA VIEW ¨C on Shanxi/Yongjia Rd. Bought ourselves a lot of great pieces from Thailand, India and Indonesia ¨C and enjoyed a complimentary couple glasses of wine whilst we were doing so! What a sales tactic!

Was wondering if anyone else knows of some similar location ¨C where you can get your hands on mainly Thai, Indian & Indonesian pieces for the house?

Another questions ¨C Chinese divider screens. Wheres the best place in town to pick up a few beauties?

We purchased several divider screens (painted and carved) from a very large shop on Wusong Road. I don't have the cross street or building number handy, but will try to look for the brochure when I am home. You can also have them custom made at any of the wood carving shops that are sprinkled around town (the one I used in in Gubei).

Magnolia,

Did you manage to find the address? What's the average price for a carved screen?

Tks!

Ah! I finally found this old thread that I needed, as I was trying to find Asia View. I hope they're still around and will check out by the weekend.

My question to Magnolia or others ---> does anyone have a shop name/address for any places that have a nice selection of carved wooden screens?

Thanks in advance!

I wish I could remember the exact address for the place I was mentioning... it is right off of Wusong Road, and I know that's a big road. Will try to look for some of my import paperwork and see if the name pops up...

Wooden screens... if they are new, you may want to have a look around Wusong Road, suamei... just make a day of exploring the various places. I had several made somewhere there a few years ago (for work and home) and they did a great job. I wish I could supply better information. When I am next in Shanghai, I am probably going to spend some time there and will try to find the place and provide the address.

There used to be a great furniture place near the Shanghai Blood Center on the street Zhao Jia Bang Road turns into when headed towards Gubei (is that Gubei Lu?... How quickly we forget...) it was bascially across the street and tucked into one of those long driveways that share with a lot of buildings. A man from HK used to have one store and do a lot of custom work. Think his name is Benny. The shop in front of his was run by a woman who brought in tons of things from SE Asia... furniture and decorative items. I wish I could remember more...

Hi, Magnolia!
It IS amazing how our memories get short-circuited... amazing..grr and frustrating, I know!!
Good idea to explore more on that road! I'll do that! If I re-discover that shop (where we did at one time purchase a beautiful bookshelf from Indonesia), I'll post here.
Good weekend to you--- we should meet up again at O'Malley's sometime!

Thank you!

BTW... my brain fart was for Hong Qiao road... remembered it earlier as I went out for a smoke. Bu that doesn't help with the smaller streets. Going to send you a PM.

I am hugely disappointed with the recent purchase which was told to me as antique furniture. Later on the furniture was found to be bogus and had nothing to do with antiquity. Now my question is how can people like us who are novices in recognizing these collectibles identify them? Well I brought it from a fair and the address for communication and the contact nos. of the office are all bogus therefore I cannot even locate and challenge them. Please be aware of such people.

buyer beware...almost all antiques here are replicas. If its seems too good to be true, it probably is. there is no way for novices to really tell. Best to find someone who knows furniture to walk you through it. many of teh factories I used to visit made replica antiques for the American and Euro market. but at least their stiff was clearly labled with their branding and Made In China markings. But they used no nails in many of these pieces, just wood dowels... unless you knew the wood they used, likely it would take someone who knew furniture to tell you.
6 years of experiences, good, bad ugly... and survived.

that is bad luck sizzle. hope u did not pay too much for them.

have been searching the net and the prices vary soo much and guess got to try to stick to a reputable shop (at least u can find them) or at least pay how much u like it without considering them to be antiques?

eyeing a few pieces from henry studio and antiques but bit pricey
