Any recommendation for a good Beijing Duck?

Got a recipe? A restaurant recommendation? Got a comment about eating and drinking? Post something in the FOOD forum.

Local Chinese seem to rate Lao Beijing, Quanjude and Ya Wan (Duck King) about the same. The prices don't differ drastically either, generally 80-140RMB/head, although Lao Beijing is slightly more expensive.

Lao Beijing: http://en.57575777.com/shanghai/restaur ... 3514.shtml

Quanjude is in Pudong (3rd Floor, Purple Mountain Hotel, 778 Dongfang Road (near Zhangyang Road/东方路778号紫金山大酒店3楼近张杨路 ) and Zhabei (547 West Tianmu Road (near Chang'an Road) / 天目西路547号近长安路 ) and Ya Wang has branches all over, including a fairly convenient one in Jing'an (77 Jiangning Road (near Fengxian Road) /江宁路77号近奉贤路)

Oic, I was there once. Found it disappointing. Prefer King Duck at west Nanjing rd because find service to be better and they don't waste bones but spice them and fry them and serve them back for additional 20 rmb....very tasty with beer.

I've been extremely pleased both times I went to Quanjude in the Purple Mountain Hotel.

I just signed up to this site to save everyone from making the mistake of going to Lao Beijing for Beijing Kaoya. I went there once just for some Zha Jiang Mian, and the place was packed. The service was decent though. After Chinese New Year I went there again to get some duck. I showed up at 8pm, the last customer was leaving, and the place was empty. Even though they had an abundance of waiters, it still took forever and about 5 times calling out to them. They kept sitting in groups chatting, and when I'd call out to them, they'd give me a dirty look and go back to their conversation. After the 5th time, one of them gave an exhasperated sigh and came over to my table to give me a menu then took off again before I could even stop her. I'd have told her to **** off, and walked out if I hadn't been on a date at the time. After finally getting them back to order, I ordered half a duck since it was only two of us. When the duck finally came out, it was a half of a decrepid looking duck that looks like the person who got the first half ordered it a week ago. It tasted horrible, and I even complained to them and they just walked away without saying anything. I'll never go back there again!

I've had Beijing Duck in different cities all over China and even in the US. This was the absolute worst (even over the crap they passed off as Beijing duck in the US), and the best is still Da Dong in Beijing (the branch by Tuanjiehu).

^ Lao Beijing is the ONLY place I go to in SH. It's the best duck I could find, not a patch on Da Dong in Beijing which I agree is great. You're right though the service is poor (I was once waiting with duck but no pancakes for about 10 minutes), but I kind of expect that now so I don't worry and also if you go late then yes, they're winding down so it will be worse. They won't sit around chatting when the place is full at 6pm.

Their other dishes are all really good an inexpensive so it's a favourite if there's a bigger group.

I remember Lao Beijing wraps up quite early, what can you do, it happens often at chinese restaurants. Even though the official closing time of the kitchen might be 9pm for instance, if you 're the last table at 8:30, they ll get the brooms out and put all the chairs on the tables around you to sweep the floor...

Of course there's no excuse for the attitude they gave you and the days-old duck.

Anyway, I like the duck there, the prices are good and I like their other dishes even more! I remember an amazing fried rice in a wooden bucket (no not the hollow bamboo tube).

Yes if you order a half there's always the chance it's left over from another table ordering a half. Order a whole one and it's always going to be fresh. It is harder with two which is why I never go there with less than 4 people.

Their sweet and sour fried whole fish is really good as are so many of their other dishes like the fillet beef strips and they do a great starter dish of cold beef slices and cold flat noodles in spice sauce.

Service is never going to be good but I can count on one hand the number of places where I am truly happy with the service in SH so it's not a huge issue for me. If I boycott every place that gives bad service, I'd end up starving to death or eating at Hai Di Lao every night!

It's cheap. What kills me is paying crazy inflated prices AND getting poor service.
