Used to be one called Duck King or something on Jiangning Rd. (or maybe Shanxi Rd.? - i.e. a block west) just north of Nanjing Rd. Did duck just as good or better than Quanjude and cheaper.
Naturally, I finished my set. . .

That's strange. We went to both but found that Duck King at Jiangning Lu is not as good. The roasted skin was chewy like tough paper. Didn't notice the price difference but may be there was. Quanjude was always good but again their service always sucked.

Yes you order one for 5 people as you will get 3 dishes, the wrap, the soup and the shredded meat fried with vegies. Not sure about the exact price as this is the kind of restaurant that I can order without looking at the prices (=cheap). Under 100 kuai per person all inclusive?

My favourite is Lao Beijing on Henan Lu just south of Yan An Lu, excellent duck as well as other dishes, about 130 rmb for a whole duck "two ways" including duck soup.

I noticed the Quanjude on Huai Hai Lu has changed to a duck king and there's also a duck king just by Mei Luo Cheng in Xujiahui.

I've never booked and always been able to find a table. They do the toffee covered potatoes too, very northern and the duck is the best I've had in Shanghai. After living in Beijing for several years I do have a high standard!

Yes, DA DONG is absolutely my favourite in Beijing for duck, but in Shanghai it's Lao Beijing. Not as good, but as close as you can get.

I ate at Lao Beijing on New Year's Eve and it was nice. We had a little corner area toward the window, so it didn't feel like we were eating in a giant food hall.

If you want to go all in and blow a whole bunch of cash on a great duck in a wonderful atmosphere....4 Seasons.

Best combination of great food, service, and ambiance.

Good duck, yelling, screaming, smoking, spitting.....Lao Beijing.
And 30% of the price.
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.....Dave Barry

A "Cuz" is what a native of New Zealander would call his Fathers Brothers Son.

So again, what the hell are you talking about?

There is 2 kind of duck they offer (in Duck King)cheaper (around 120 rmb) The second one is about 20-30 rmb more and is delicious. Adding +20 rmb they will grill "bones" leftover which is great with beer (this need be told to them while ordering or else they make soup for you). In fancy places I experienced they didn't want to consider frying bones - considered impolite, I guess, to nibble on them. They probably "recycle" them behind the closed door for other dishes.

Xindalu -agreed

Postby me2160 » Thu Jan 07, 2010 4:50 pm

I still like the duck in Xindalu restaurant of Hyatt on the Bund... They shipped everything from Beijing, and the oven is a big story how they built up at first place. Whole duck for CNY 238 (6 - 8 persons) or CNY 168 for half (2-3 persons). Skin with sugar, lean meat with galic sauce, leg (with meat, fat and skin) will pancake wrap together with cucumber and sauce... the rest is going to be in soup which will serve later... like it very much.
