Are your kids having braces done in Shanghai?

Postby ratty » Sat Jul 18, 2009 8:09 am

I see tons of posts here looking for orthodontist recommendations but no real comments from anyone who is having braces done on their kids here. Is anyone doing that? Positive experience? Negative?

I am trying to land a job in Shanghai now and one of my main concerns is that my 8 year old boy will need braces. He has a significant under bite. His bottom front teeth are in front of his top teeth. I had braces as a kid but my teeth were not as bad as his. So I do not know how severe a job it is to correct this under bite. Anyone have any experience with a condition like this?

thanks!

My girlfriend's son has braces. She had them done at Tokushinkai in Jinqao. So far she's been very complimentary. Not sure about the severity issue though.

Thank you very much for the info. Where is Jinqao? Is that in Puxi? I am familiar with the Jingan area or French Concession. Close to there?

Jinqiao is located in Pudong, so on the other side of the river from Puxi. From the Jing'an Area or French Concession, its about a 30-min taxi drive (up to 45mins if there is bad traffic).

Has your son been to an orthodontist in your home country? I would probably recommend getting an opinion there first, so you can understand his situation and what may be needed to correct it. This way, if you move here, you'll be getting a second (or third opinion) from other orthodontists. You'll find that different orthodontists have different ideas/theories on treating certain cases.

I can recommend an orthodontist in Pudong also. I live in the French Concession but make the trip to see him monthly.

Thank you very much for the excellent suggestion. Yes we will see a dentist here before we make the move to Shanghai.

Hi indyshiu, we live in Pudong and my son just had orthodontic consultation at Tokushinkai. We would like to hv a 2nd opinion before deciding on the treatment for him. Could you please share your recommendation with us? Would you know how much/what is the range of costs for braces? Thank you.

not sure if you speak Mandarin. My son is now seeing Dr Tyler Yuan (袁医生) of Arrail Dental at 恒隆广场(Henglong Guangchang) in Puxi. He started wearing braces since 1 Apr. So far we're happy with Dr Yuan and 2 other friends' kids are also with him. We are paying 20k for the whole process and upfront payment is 40% with balance paid at the end of the whole 1.5-2yrs.

I'm very surprised 20K is what they charge for braces at Plaza 66. We had ours done at IMD Dental Clinic and it's an inexpensive place (we did some research 2years ago) and we paid 24K. It'd be another month until the braces come off so will let you know the result. I heard a friend's friend who just paid 50K for hers and her dentist is from Hong Kong.

I don't think the cost of braces is determined by the location of the dental clinic. Orthodontic treatment entails many things and it really depends on what is needed besides the braces itself. And even for the braces, there's many 'brands' and types to choose from. If a child needs more than corrective, eg removal of teeth, other underlying issues, then obviously the cost will be higher. And if one chooses to use branded import braces, or ceramic ones, likewise will push up the cost too.

We went to Tokushinkai and Arrail. Both gave us quotes of RMB20-30k. My son's case is not very complicated, just that he is genetically short of one teeth near the upper front. After the initial consultations are both, we decided that we felt more comfortable with Dr Yuan and his proposal for treatment. His nurse told us that my son's treatment would have totalled about 24k, but he rounded it up and charged us 20k.

It's been 6mths since my son started his treatment and we've already seen very significant improvement in his teeth. As long as he's happy with Dr Yuan, we are happy too.

Just sharing our experience.

I can't help yet with a Shanghai recommendation, but in terms of potential treatments a possibility to avoid braces is to wear an appliance that gradually spreads- this can help if the teeth are too crowded and also can realign the jaw to correct underbite. We're hoping it will keep our daughter out of braces when she's older; we started the treatment in France but understand it is also common in the US. But each mouth is different and might need different techniques.

I just replied to a similar post on the subject. My eldest has been wearing braces for almost a year, should be having them off next month. He's with Dr Henry Wong at Healthway Clinic Jinqiao. Professional and kind dentist, does a good job for slightly more than 20000rmb (but it'll all depend on the job you need), and English-speaking of course since he's from Singapore.

We paid half the amount upfront and the other half in monthly instalments since the kid needed to visit him every month. All in all it was a really positive experience and my younger kids, believe it or not, are looking forward to their turn (but I'm not, of course)!

The clinic is small and quiet and as such we felt quite at home there, and if you ever need more sophisticated machinery e.g. xrays they actually have a beautiful branch at Liujiazui.

PS : My husband tried out a cleaning job last year at Tokukin-whatever and left unimpressed. Said the dentist he saw had bad bedside manners and limited English. Though other friends had more positive experiences there.
